The biggest misconception about apples are that they need to only wear loose fitting, empire waist style tops; which can sometimes make them look pregnant. It is all about lines and layers to give a smooth, lean appearance for an apple. Apples are usually heavier on top meaning they can have a big bust or back, a rounder middle and bottom, wide shoulders and small arms; some combination of these.
The number one rule, avoid tops that stop at your waist. These styles of tops will cut you at the middle and can also give the dreaded muffin top look. Aim for tops that stop past the waist which will automatically lengthen you and slim the middle. Pair a light colored solid or printed tee with a lightweight linen jacket or blazer in a darker color that structures in at the waist and gives a slight flare; this will give you the appearance of a waist. Wearing a wide belt also creates a waist. Apples should not feel the need to avoid printed tops or stripes. Look for striped tops where the lines go vertical or in a diagonal. Horizontal stripes can make any shape appear bigger, but can be accomplished if countered with a solid jacket or vest.
Since apples tend to have a heavier top, trouser pants with a wider pant leg can help balance the proportions out; boot cut jeans are also a great option. Don’t think for one second that an apple can’t wear skinnies. Wear your skinny jeans, but make sure to pair them with a tunic style top or a tee and blazer combo (just make sure your tops past your waist and hips).
