Depending on how tight your curls or coils are, detangling your tresses can be a tedious ordeal. Here are some ways to make the detangling process smoother while leaving your hair tangle free.
Dry detangle before washing.
If you wear your hair out most of the time, you may experience more knots and tangles than someone who wears protective styles. Detangling your hair before washing will help get a lot of the shed hairs out, which is the cause for most of the tangles when washing. Use olive oil or a conditioner and detangle in sections. This will help eliminate a lot of hair in the drain.
Wash and condition in sections.
Washing and conditioning your hair in sections helps keep your hair manageable during the cleansing process without negating the work accomplished from dry detangling. It may take a little longer, but you lose less hair and the process is not as frustrating as when washing and conditioning without sections.
Keep your hair stretched.
If you have tightly coiled hair you’re more susceptible to tangles and knots. Keep your hair stretched by doing braidouts, twistouts or implementing protective styles. Section your hair at night to keep hair from matting and tangling. As always, sleep in a satin scarf or bonnet.
Have patience.
In the end it all comes down to patience. Without it you’ll end up with clumps of hair in your hands or no hair at all. Everything is a process and detangling, when done right, can be a quick or tedious one. It depends on how you take care of your hair and the level of patience you have throughout the process.
