On this week’s episode of How I Met Your Mother, we’re asked to choose a winner in the battle of Mystery vs. History. Whether it’s the smartphone that ended enthusiastic bar debates or learning the gender of your baby, are technology advances that foreshadow the future worth the loss of mystery? Well, the hopeless romantic, Ted says no. Ted, tired of having preconceived notions about his dates, decides to preserve the mystery. He goes on a first date with a girl he meets at the bar, Janet (Amber Stevens, Greek) without letting Barney and Robin research her on the internet beforehand. Despite Ted’s request, Barney and Robin go into research-mode and—sweet mother of God—they find out something crucial about Janet. While Ted’s on his date, they send Ted the link to Janet’s history via the smartphone, of course. Meanwhile, Barney also insists that Lily and Marshall are crazy for not wanting to know the gender of their baby. The couple says they want to avoid gender specific expectations, but as the gang helps paint the nursery an unpleasant gender-neutral yellow, it unfolds that both Marshall and Lily are eager to know the gender of their baby even though they feel guilty about their curiosity. Observing all of this, Kevin (Kal Penn), Robin’s therapist turned boyfriend who previously swore to refrain from analyzing his girlfriend’s friends, bursts into judgment. He finds the gang to be a dysfunctional and overly involved group of friends. But don’t worry; the gang quickly forgives him when he offers to finish painting the room on his own. The gender of the baby remains a mystery for a short while, but Janet’s history doesn’t. Ted is afraid that Janet has a terrible dark secret (God forbid, she doesn’t like Annie Hall) and decides to click on the link, but—sweet mother of God—it turns out Janet’s… well watch the episode here to find out!
Lessons learned:
- No matter how tempted you are, don’t Google your date.
- It’s natural to want to know the gender of your baby. The important thing to remember is that no matter the gender, boys can take ballet lessons and girls can play football.
