Always second to Rachel Barry, Rachel and Mercedes’ Diva Showdown finally gave Mercedes (Amber Riley) the credit she deserves. All the sassy attitude and complaining about being number two might have been getting irksome, but finally paid off. We’re looking forward to seeing Mercedes come into her own and take the spotlight, especially if Rachel’s graduating next year! Let’s look back at Mercedes’ best moments that put her on top of the Diva list.

“Bust Your Windows” by Jazmine’s Sullivan– Remember Mercedes’ break out solo in season one episode “Acafella”? Mercedes gets angry that Kurt has a crush on someone else, and not her. Why she doesn’t see that he’s not into girls, we’re not sure, but we love her excuse to bust his windows! She lets out her true diva power that proves that there’s more to the Glee cast than Rachel and Finn.
“And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” by Jennifer Holiday in the musical Dreamgirls and Jennifer Hudson in the film Dreamgirls– Mercedes is frustrated that Rachel always receives the solo acts, and in season one episode “Sectionals”, Mercedes demands a chance to audition. Her rendition impresses the entire club, including Rachel, and the New Directions agree that Mercedes should perform the ballad at sectionals.
“Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Aretha Franklin- In episode “Grilled Cheesus” of season two, Kurt’s father suffers a heart attack, and the glee club shows their support by singing songs of prayer. Even though Kurt announces that he’s an atheist, he agrees to go with best friend Mercedes to her church, where she and the choir perform for Kurt.
“River deep – Mountain high” by Ike & Tina Turner- In the season two episode “Duets” Mercedes gives a competitive performance with Santana during the duet competition. Unfortunately, they don’t win the competition, because everyone wants Sam and Quinn to win so Sam thinks glee club is cool, but Glee fans know better!
“Spotlight” originally performed by Jennifer Hudson – Mercedes, now with a new boyfriend to encourage her, auditions for Maria in the latest season three episode “Asian F.” The performance lands her the part shared with Rachel, but Mercedes forgoes it to join Sheryl’s glee club. We can’t wait to see her in her own spotlight.
Runner ups – Renditions of Arthea Frank’s “Ain’t No Way” and “R-E-S-P-E-C-T.” “Hell to the No” in episode “Original Song” and her soothing solo in the backdrop of Haverbrook School for the Deaf choir’s performance of “Imagine” by John Lenon in season one episode “Hairography.”
If there’s no baseball, Glee will return Wednesday, October 26, 8 pm ET on FOX
