I forewarn you, this may read as a jumbled post of thoughts; but that’s ok. Instagram, in case you didn’t know, is a very popular photo sharing app that lets you add filters and choose to share with just your Instagram followers or through other social network sites. Recently the app became available for android users after being an iPhone only app.
Of course I use Instagram; I have my 365 day photo challenge, I Instagram fashion finds, food and other random things; I mean you even get a semi glance into my life and me working on side projects. These types of things make Instagram fun, peeking into other people’s lives, sharing memories, interests; but recently Instagram has taken a rather disturbing turn (at least for me).
We’re all about female empowerment here, self love; but I’ve been noticing a lot of scantily clad pictures of women in my feed. It was bad enough we have to deal with it (along with spam) on Facebook, but Instagram was kind of like a sacred place where people interested in similar things could share those likes in a safe (and hopefully clean) environment. I just basically want to stress that we should respect ourselves, our bodies off and especially, online.
Respecting yourself starts with you. People treat you dependent on how you portray yourself. Have some respect, some dignity; because those “likes” you get under those pictures doesn’t mean anything but temporary satisfaction in your mind. Those people who “like” those photos only see you in one way and in person will treat you how they think you are based off some Instagram (or Facebook) photos.
