A key and important part of Obama’s health care law officially went into motion yesterday (Wednesday). The Mikulski Women’s Preventive Health Amendment guarantees that all women will receive at no cost these benefits:
- Annual preventive care check-up including breast exams, pre-conception & prenatal care, pap testing and pelvic exam
- Screening for gestational diabetes
- HPV testing
- HIV & STI screening and support
- FDA-approved contraception & contraceptive counseling
- Breastfeeding support, supplies & counseling
- Domestic violence screening & counseling
This is a major win for women in general! But of course some people are strongly against this amendment, particularly the part about contraceptives. So with that being said I just wanted to leave you with a few statistics, shall we?
Approximately 20 million people are currently infected with Human Papillomaviruses or HPV and by age 50 at least 80% of sexually active women will have acquired HPV. At least 50% of sexually active men and women currently have HPV and many may not even know it. That’s a lot of people! Before this plan if you weren’t getting regular checkups you could have this infection and unknowingly pass it on to your partner. Although it can go away on it’s own without you even knowing you ever had it (there is no medication to fight HPV once you have it), if not detected it can cause more harm than good; like cervical cancer which is included in the amendment (testing for HPV and pelvic exams).
Yes you might get fined money if you don’t abide by the law, but lets not think about ourselves for a minute but of the many women whose life will inevitably be saved. It doesn’t matter who you vote for, but what you stand for. We as women should stand up for all women because someone less fortunate than you can now get the necessary screening they need to live a complete and healthy life.
