Growing up heavily influenced by music, Miasha knew from a young age that she wanted to pursue a music career. She trained in opera attending workshops and classes before she went out on her own, discovering house music and dubstep. After a life changing experience and a lot of hard work and dedication, Miasha is ready to share her music with the world. Check out our interview with her below!
iG: When did you know you wanted to be a singer and what has your journey been like so far?
M: I was hungry for doing music and I wanted to sing, I definitely wanted to do that. I just wasn’t sure who I was and hadn’t found my true authentic self. I started to go out and experience New York City and I fell in love with progressive house music, dubstep and vocal house. I loved those beats and productions and I knew somewhere along the line that I wanted to do those strong female vocal voices like Tina Turner and Nina Simone but I wanted to use house music as the production, as the background for it and definitely mix some rock in there. It took finding which direction I wanted to go and what I wanted to do.
I was faced with a lot of personal tragedy. It was definitely a moment of time where I felt lost, and not just musically. I’d always used music to kind of guide me through my life and at the point when all of this tragedy was happening in my family, I really felt like I lost my voice. I didn’t know what I was doing or the direction I wanted to take and I ended up going to this huge festival called Burning Masses. It’s in the middle of this desert and I just thought I have to go do something, I need to have some kind of awakening whether it’s spiritual or just to listen to different music.
So I went there and the second to last day there was this big temple that they burned and the whole time you’re there you’re able to write things on the wall. I wrote asking this temple to give me strength and direction; strength to deal with the personal tragedy and direction in my music; how can I be authentic to myself and create something I love.
When I got back I made a goal for myself that I’m going to sing no matter what and I’m going to do what I love to do and incorporate all of the sounds and styles I love and just do me, not really caring what anyone thinks I should.
I hooked up with this great mentor who I still work with today. She went through so much vocal technique.
It’s was three years ago that I went to Burning Masses and three years in the making of creating my debut song and album and finding my voice for Everybody’s Beautiful.
iG: So you recently released your debut single Everybody’s Beautiful. What’s the meaning of the song for you and why did you want this to be the first thing people heard from your project?
M: I definitely think it’s a perfect first song to release to the world because I definitely went through being lost and being insecure and not knowing what I wanted to do and the song speaks directly to that. At the end it kind of just says you really are beautiful when you’re your true self and you’re authentic.
iG: Have you shot the video for your single yet? What can we expect?
M: I wanted to film people in New Y ork City who were just dancing and doing their own thing. I went to the lower eastside with this old school boombox and my friend had a video camera. I turned it on and asked about 65 random people can you dance to this (Beautiful People) and do your own thing? Ninety percent were like yea I’ll do it, so they were just breaking it down dancing in the middle of the streets and I love that so much because that’s exactly what my song speaks to! It speaks to being yourself and I wanted to get every type of person and feeling. So you’ll see clips of this footage in the video.
iG: When can we expect your album?
M: Early next year, the album is kind of my own journey. I’m kind of creating this alternative world so when you listen to my music it kind of really takes you on a full journey. Each song is telling a story to get to the ending of my story. So it’s a full journey and a full experience.
iG: Why do you think it’s important to go through those downs to get to the ups and why is it important to stay true to who you are throughout the process?
M: When you’re faced with things in your life that are really difficult or you’re not sure who you are or what you want to be, I just think it’s so helpful to just go through those hard moments. Those moments make you that really strong person, if you can see the end and visualize ‘I’m going to make it through this’. I think in anything you do it resonates true. We end up with ourselves at the end of the day, and it really doesn’t come down to anyone else but ourselves. We hold the most power when we’re being true and authentic to ourselves.
iG:What’s been the best part of your journey so far?
M: Being able to wake up every single day and make music. Music has been my obsession my whole life and its been around me and my family. It’s cool to be able to go to the studio, I’m learning to create my own music and write my own lyrics then I’m able to go home and listen to it and I’m like, oh my gosh that’s awesome! So I’m just excited for the world to hear everything and know how hard I’ve worked on it. Hopefully it will resonate with a lot of people because we all have inner struggles.
iG: Of course we have to talk a little bit about fashion. How would you describe your personal style?
M: I love layering and I love fall clothing, so things like leather boots and leather pants. It’s almost like an androgynous look, so mixing it with a men’s tuxedo jackets and a feminine flowy shirt— there’s this dichotomy that’s in my music that’s kind of in my fashion as well which mixes two extremes.
iG: What are you most looking forward to wearing this fall season?
M: I was looking at John Galliano’s new line and it’s based around the top hat, like an old school black top hat. So I was like, uh I kind of want to rock a top hat. I love that, so I think I’m going to rock that a lot this fall!
