You started the year off strong exercising, eating clean and overall sticking to your health and fitness goals. Now spring is literally around the corner and all of these marathons are popping up. 5K, 10K and even the half marathon may seem tempting, but let’s face it, you’ve never run a marathon ( or 3 miles straight) a day in your life.
You feel a mixture of anxiety and excitement, because you feel like you just might be able to do this. Well, how about we give you that extra push? There are four things to consider while preparing for your first marathon.
1. Train, train, train!
If you’ve never run a marathon you might not want to just jump up and try to run one on a whim. Running a marathon is all about maintaining your endurance. There are a lot of free resources that you can utilize to help prepare you for the big day. Couch to 5K is a great app for your phone that helps condition you over an eight week time period to run a 5K. They even have a version for prepping for longer marathons.
2. Look good in what you wear
Like we’ve said in previous posts, when you look good you feel good. This also applies to running. Wearing pieces that absorb moisture and are form fitting will help keep you cooler and you won’t have to worry about constantly adjusting ill fitting, super loose clothes. If on a budget, check out our guide to affordable workout wear essentials here!
3. Find the right fit
We discussed the importance of having shoes that are not only comfortable, but fit. You will be running for a long time, so you want your feet to be comfortable and blister free. There are many resources online that will help you find the right running shoes, but the most important thing will be to try them on, move around in them and get a feel for them. Check out this post on finding your perfect shoe here!
4. Get out of your head!
When it all boils down to it, you can be your biggest cheerleader or your greatest hurdle. Throughout the entire process you may try to talk yourself out of completing the race, but you have to push through all of the doubt and insecurities and just go for it! It will be something else that you can mark off of your list, and you’ll feel even better once you cross that finish line!
