After a long, heart pumping workout, a sufficient cool down is necessary. Some people say you need, it some say skip it, but we say do it! Incorporating a good cool down to your routine will help you not only feel good but it also allows your body get back in sync.
What do we mean by get in sync? After working out your blood flow moves toward your legs and feet. Just abruptly stopping a workout can cause fainting or dizziness and that’s something we want to avoid. A proper cool down allows you to bring your heart rate down and help prevent the dizziness.
Cool Down Tips
Stretch! While stretching is not a cool down must, stretching during post workout is more beneficial than pre-workout because your muscles are warm. Stretching at this point will help increase flexibility and help prevent future injury.
Breathe! Breathing is an essential part before, during and after your workout. Breathing through your moves during your cool down will help put you in a relaxed state. This is what will help bring your heart rate down and keep it there.
Savasana! While this is a common end pose for yoga, it’s a great pose to work into any workout. In savasana you’re laying flat on your back, palms up with your eyes closed. This pose will put you in your most relaxed state and includes many benefits which can be found below!
– A decrease in heart rate and the rate of respiration, blood pressure, muscle tension and fatigue; coupled with deeper and sounder sleep. A reduction in general anxiety and the frequency of panic attacks. An increase in energy levels, general productivity and focus. An improvement in concentration, memory and self confidence.
While some or all of these benefits may be true for some, it’s a definite that you will feel relaxed and in a calmer frame of mind and space once you complete your cool down routine. Cooling down is about letting your body regroup, and continually incorporating these practices into your routine will insure you get the most out of your 10 minute post workout cool down!
