SPOILERS FOLLOW! (do not read if you don’t want to know what happened on season 3 episode 1 of Scandal)
So Scandal returned last night and oh what a return it was. I’m still trying to completely process what I just watched. It seemed like all of America (except the West Coast) was watching Scandal last night at 10/9 cst.

It opened just as intense as last season ended, with Olivia in the car with her father. If you ever wondered where Olivia got her “fixer” capabilities from, she got it from her daddy. He came with a full, complete and concrete escape plan for Liv to disappear. It’s during this back and forth that we find out Olivia’s mom passed and there has been tension between her and her father for a very long time. While he’s not my particular favorite person, a lot of what he said to Olivia about her current situation was entirely true and much needed realism.
But it was short lived. Once Olivia was boarded on the plane she got a call from Cyrus who convinced her not to run away and all of this happened in the first 10 minutes. Olivia heads to the office where she’s greeted with a worried team. Leave it to Harrison to take initiative. Liv is all like, “leave it alone it’s being handled” and Harrison is all like “forget Olivia, we’re going to help her even if she can’t help herself”.
Video surfaces of Fitz leaving Olivia’s apartment late at night and Cyrus orders a kill folder on her. With things looking like it’s drastically getting worse, Liv is summoned once again by her father who tells her that he’s pretty much her only option for getting out of this mess. Well, Ms. Olivia wasn’t having that. She heads home, opens a secret compartment, takes at secret documents, calls a number and is wisked away to an unknown location. Who’s there? None other than Fitz, and apparently Olivia set off an alarm that can only be used once for dire emergencies (like say the US is being attacked and you don’t want to die, this would be a great tool to have).
They’re soon joined by Mellie and thus the sparring begins. It quickly becomes clear that this is Olivia “fixing” the situation. Fitz suggests they just tell the truth, but Mellie isn’t about that at all. She goes back and forth with both Olivia and Fitz, calling Liv a whore (which she is… I mean she is sleeping with a married man no matter how much he wishes otherwise) and opening the door for Fitz to pretty much say to her face (his wife’s face mind you) that he’s indeed in love with Olivia Pope. They settle on a half truth where the situation is made to appear lighter than what it really is and Mellie leaves in haste. Of course you can’t finish an intense scene like this one without a steamy Fitz/Liv interaction, even if it’s only a touch.
When then cut to Mellie meeting up with Cyrus saying she doesn’t want Fitz and Olivia to tell the truth and they need to stop them before the press conference in three hours. We then cut to the Gladiators hovered around a disk going back and forth about if they should do “it”, whatever “it” is. Next thing we know, we’re back at the white house where the team is being briefed on the press conference only to be interrupted by a news segment attaching a totally different White House aide (Jeannine Locke) to the Fitz mistress scandal and taking the focus off of Olivia Pope.
So this is where everyone’s all like “Yea, Gladiators to the rescue!” and we’re doing back flips and many praise breaks only to find out this was all orchestrated by someone (or two) completely different. The last ten minutes answered a lot of questions but revealed even more questions in the same breath.
First, Mellie confronts Fitz who thinks Cyrus is behind the story linking the other girl to him. Well, Mellie lets him know that she was the one behind it because she knew that Fitz was the one who leaked Olivia’s name (and everyone on Twitter was like, ‘say what?’). Then Fitz tells Mellie he did all of this so Olivia could be free from Mellie’s constant threats of exposing her. I’ll let you try to process that, because the episode doesn’t end there. The last five minutes (I think) sets us up for what we’ll be trying to figure out all season.
Cyrus walks in the house to find Charlie (the trained assassin who helped him a lot last season) sitting on his bed next to his drugged husband pointing a gun at Cyrus. Cyrus is taken to an unidentified location where he meets none other than Olivia’s daddy who has him sign a release with his finger prints and signture so he can open a folder. All we know is the folder contains information about what really happened on a mission in Iran that Fitz and Jake went on, and by the look on Cyrus face it’s something extra juicy.
So there you have it! The recap of the first episode from season three of scandal. This is going to be one intense season, and I’m am so ready to see where it takes us.
