SPOILER ALERT! (stop reading if you don’t want to know what happens in this episode)
So after last week’s closing shocker, this week we didn’t really learn more than what we already knew about Operation Remington, Fitz missing flight records and Olivia’s mother being on the plan that was shot down. Olivia confronts Fitz about it and he tells her he has no idea what she’s talking about and will never know what she’s talking about. The in Olivia’s mind, I’m guessing, proves that Fitz indeed shot the plane down so she turns down the job working on his re-election campaign. Of course Mellie and Cyrus go ballistic.
Pope & Associates take the job working on Josie Marcus’ campaign. Olivia and Abby go to task trying to get Josie to shed her “good girl” and “Martha Stewart-esque” ways but are met with resistance at every turn. Meanwhile, VP Sally is still plotting to run against the president as an independent. With direction from her newly hired campaign manager, they set up a plan for her to try to get the religious votes by having a prominent faith leader talk negatively about the president so that Cyrus would send her out to clean up the mess.
It pretty much goes as plan and she lets the faith leader know about her plans to run and how it will benefit him and the community. After losing Olivia, Fitz tells Cyrus that she knows about Operation Remington and Cyrus has a talk with Daddy Pope. Rowan puts a hit out on Jake while Cyrus is supposed to stop Josie’s campaign. Cyrus calls Harrison and tries to blackmail him by saying he will approve a visa for Anand Salif to return to the states. Harrison gets freaked out and has Huck erase all visa records for Salif. He then meets Cyrus and calls his bluff and refuses to help him. We later find out the Cyrus knew the faith leader and he’s told about Sally’s plans to run against Fitz.
In her own little world Quinn, aka Baby Huck, has been hitting up the gun range where she runs into Charlie. He pretty much becomes her coach teaching her how to hit her target. After setting up an interview with James, Olivia and Abby show Josie an ad supposedly by Governor Reston that gets her riled up. She goes on the interview and pretty much shuts all of the naysayers and sexists up. After the interview, funding for the campaign starts to flow in and it’s revealed that the ad was a fake created by Pope & Associates to help push Josie get upset and not back down from anything.
Jake goes to meet an associate for missing files from the plan Fitz was flying not know he was walking into a set up. A person from the White House security detail had been tracking him and kills the associate before she pulls out her gun to shoot Jake. Jake is taken to the White House where he and Fitz go back and forth (about Olivia) and Fitz throws in the towel telling Jake that he’s not helping him anymore.
Fitz pays Olivia a visit at her house and she demands an answer from him about Operation Remington. He consistently says he doesn’t know what she’s talking about. She reveals that her mother died on that plan and Fitz still plays the dummy claiming he doesn’t know what she’s talking about when clearly we can see from the emotions he starts to develop that he does. She kicks him out and he gets on the elevator with a the puppy dog eyes.
We end with a phone call between Daddy Pope and Charlie and we find out that Daddy Pope is out to possibly recruit Quinn into B613… say it ain’t so!
Some takeaways…
– I am happy about the tension between Olivia and Fitz. Hopefully Liv will figure out that he’s no good for her and move on (I know I’m one of the few who wants this).
– I was also happy to see a little peek into Harrison’s back story and with Cyrus approving a visa for Salif we’re going to definitely get into his story which is long overdue.
– I’m kind of digging the Mellie and Cyrus tag team this season. They’ve always kind of collaborated but this season they seem to be doing it a little bit more willingly and it’s interesting to see what schemes they come up with.
– We find out that Daddy Pope didn’t order the hit on the passenger plane Olivia’s mom was on, but I’m ready for someone to give us the complete deets on what really happened soon.
