SPOILER ALERT! (stop reading if you don’t want to know what happens in this episode)
O.M.G. I’ll wait and let you recover a little from last night’s most intense episode of the series… Ok are you ready to get into last night’s recap?
We open with Huck and a taped up Quinn. Huck is obviously high off of the thrill of hurting her and he even tries to be nice, if you could even consider this type of torture nice, and overs her the friends and family discount… not taking off her fingers and toes, but going straight for the teeth. In the middle of this he gets a call from a distraught Olivia who has her not dead mother and doesn’t know what to do with her. Huck orders her to go to the safe house, but before he joins them there he just has to pull at least one of Quinn’s teeth.
At the safe house they’re joined by Harrison, Abby and Jake and they’re all trying to figure out just what the deal is with Mama Pope and why she was locked away for 22 years. When Huck and Jake realize she escaped Rowan they immediately grab her and detract a tracking advice. The team leaves and heads to a motel before Charlie and crew show up. Huck and Jake go through B613 routine and hand out phone scramblers, change the car’s license plate and use some sort of traffic camera windshield spray to insure they stay out of sight of Commander. Jake and Huck know that they’ll never be able to outrun B613 so they plan to try to kill Rowan.
Meanwhile Cyrus is totally distraught over the whole James and Daniel thing. James pretty much rubs it in his face with not so slight innuendos. Cyrus arrives home expecting to find James in another compromising position but he’s home alone. Cyrus totally freaks out and James goes off on him telling Cyrus that he ruined their marriage, he pimped him out and he wants a divorce. Cyrus reveals he has pictures as proof of his infidelity but he’s interrupted by a call from Fitz. Fitz is wound up because Sally has approached him letting him know she planned to run against him as an independent and there was nothing he could do about.
Recap: Scandal Episode 308 ‘Vermont is For Lovers, Too’
Fitz doesn’t think Cyrus handled the situation and chews him out as Mellie watches. Fitz leaves and Mellie confronts him about what happened with James and Daniel. Cyrus breaks down and Mellie offers her advice/support, if you could call it that, and tells him that he thinks this will kill him but it won’t break him.
Meanwhile Jake approached Fitz and tells him about Mama Pope being alive. He tries to get Fitz to help him take down Rowan but Fitz is too wound up in his feelings. He doesn’t want to give Jake what he’s asking for because he feels like he’s trying to be Olivia’s hero. He tells Jake she doesn’t need a hero and Jake tells him how he’s never had his back. He talks about Remington and how all Fitz has to do is shake hands and smile while Jake got pulled into B613. Jake leaves and tries to do it on his own, but his team walks into a trap and are blown by a bomb set up by Rowan and Charlie (Jake was outside the building so he’s still alive). Rowan tells Charlie to find Quinn so they can figure out what’s going on with OPA, but Charlie tells him he can’t reach her.
Charlie shows up at Quinn’s house and finds her bound. He takes her to his place and she gets cleaned up. She has a mini breakdown about how Huck was the only one she had and Charlie tells her she now has him and then they sleep together (mind you she was just having her teeth pulled not too long ago). Olivia’s mom tries to get her to talk to her and tells her how she doesn’t seem happy; how she had imagined a better life for her but she took after her father. At the same time, OPA is having a hard time getting Mama Pope out of the country because Rowan added her to the no fly list, listing her as a terrorist. Olivia breaks down and calls Fitz saying she just wants to talk and doesn’t want any favors. After confessing his love for her Fitz tells her that he’ll handle her mother’s situation and there’s nothing she can do about it.
Cyrus pays Sally a visit and shows her the pictures of James and Daniel. Sally shows no emotions and calls Cyrus’ bluff, telling him she knows he’ll never release the photos because James is his husband and the campaign is not prepared to clean up the mess it would cause being that the president’s chief of staff’s husband slept with a married man. Cyrus pretty much knows it’s true and leaves.
OPA take Mama Pope to an airstrip where and Air Force aircraft will take her to Hong Kong. After a tearful goodbye (semi forced by Abby) Mama Pope boards the plane. As it takes off Olivia remembers a phone call from the last time she saw her mother leave. She calls Huck and has him tell her the alias her father used on the no fly list. She then realizes that her mother is actually the dangerous one and that Rowan was trying to protect her. Huck is all like oh crap because apparently he made some type of deal with Quinn.
Quinn and Charlie enter Rowan’s office and she demands all copies of the security footage from the night when she killed the man in exchange for information and we see her pull out some type of needle which is obviously for Rowan. But that’s not all…
We end with a still distraught Cyrus sitting in his office. He calls James and tells him no one will ever see the photos (that’s a lie) and that they can move on from this but all we see is James in their room next to a packed suitcase. Cyrus then gets a call from Sally who tells him she’d just committed a sin. The camera then pans and widens and we see a clearly dead Daniel on the floor of her office lying in a pool of blood. O.M.G.
Some takeaways…
– I have no idea which way this winter finale is going to go. There are so many possibilities and I’m pretty sure someone else is going to die.
– I knew Mama Pope wasn’t the victim, I mean she ate chunks out of her arm in the last episode, like who does that?! I’m pretty sure if she’s caught she’s going to be killed or taken to an even more locked down facility.
– I don’t think Rowan will die. I’m not sure how this will effect his and Olivia’s relationship moving forward since there are just too many secrets. From the preview he does get captured by Jake so that will definitely be an interesting scene next week.
– What would I like to see next week? A conclusion to this Mama Pope storyline. It’s just gotten too gruesome for my blood. I have a low tolerance for blood and this show has surpassed my limits. I don’t watch crazy blood related shows for that very reason. I’d love to get back to OPA managing their weekly clients because it added a little reality to the show and we’ve veered way off track. It was a solid episode, the best of the series, but I so hope this part of the storyline ends next week.
