SPOILER ALERT! (stop reading if you don’t want to know what happens in this episode)
Are you still recovering from last night’s mid-season finale? Well don’t worry, you have until February 27 to make a full comeback. Now let’s get into this recap.
We start of with Sally and Daniel and we see just how Sally murdered her husband. Sally and Daniel went blow for blow, and Daniel even told Sally she knew he was gay since college (which she denied) and he signed a deal with the devil. Of course Sally threw her hits telling him he’s going straight to hell. Well the bad took a turn for the worse when Daniel declared he was leaving Sally and that she wouldn’t be able to run for president without him, because he was “her balls”. Well that officially did. Sally snapped, stabbed him multiple times in the back with an envelope opening and then called Cyrus.
Cyrus shows up and as Sally sat chanting “the devil came in me” realization hit him that this was all his fault; that none of this wouldn’t have happened if him and Mellie never would’ve set Daniel up. Then he throws up. He calls Charlie to clean up and stage Daniel’s death. Of course Quinn tags along. They set it up to make it look like Daniel had a heart attack.
Recap: Scandal Episode 309 ‘YOLO’
Meanwhile, right before the setup, just as Quinn is about to stab Rowan with a needle; they’re interrupted and Rowan leaves. His car is intercepted by the secret service, and he’s taken to the Pentagon where he’s handcuffed and put into a room with Fitz. Fitz tries to get him to tell him why he was ordered to shoot down the plane, but Rowan tells him it’s above his pay grade.
Olivia and company is trying to track down Mama Pope, Rowan and Quinn. Olivia finds out that Huck tortured Quinn and want his to find her and bring her back. We find out that Huck put a tracking device in the space where her tooth used to be, but Quinn removed it and flushed it down the toilet once her plan to kill Rowan failed.
It’s all over the news about Daniel’s “heart attack” and James is not buying it. He believes he was murdered and goes to David who want help him and doesn’t believe him thanks to the previous mess James got him into with the whole voting scheme.
At the Pentagon, Rowan is reading Fitz for filth. Fitz decides to get ballsy, and disrespectful, and tell Rowan that he’s sleeping with Olivia and just how good she is in bed. Rowan goes off and puts Fitz in his place, calling him a boy and telling him that he doesn’t love Olivia, he just sees her as an exit; a way to get out. He tells him that he’s (Rowan) a man; he worked for everything he has and Olivia is apart of him. He also told him that he’s spoiled, a baby, used to getting his way and he’s not worthy of his daughter. You don’t know how much I wanted to run and do cartwheels around the room. I loved how Daddy Pope got Fitz together!
Huck and Jake track Rowan down and call Olivia. Olivia calls Fitz and shows up at the Pentagon. She confronts her father and tells him what she thought may have happened with her mother in relation to the whole “shoot down the plane” situation. She then tells him that that’s not what happened, but that her mother lied and Rowan ordered the passenger plane be shot down because he thought there was a bomb on it, but in reality there wasn’t. Rowan is released and Olivia demands that Fitz have her mother arrested as soon as the plane touches down in Hong Kong.
After Cyrus told Mellie about what really happened with Daniel, she pays Sally a visit to stress the point that she’s now apart of the family, thus any plans to run against Fitz should be thrown out. Sally’s campaign manager figures out that she actually killed Daniel after she shouts that he’s in hell where he should be and tells her that she should’ve came to him and not went to the white house. Cyrus gives James an ultimatum and tells him to choose how they move forward from this; all during his “I’m in my underwear and bearing my sole” performance kind of similar to the one he had last season. James makes a deal with him and tells him is he is announced as the Press Secretary then he’ll stay.
Quinn returns to OPA where Huck goes off on her, in his Huckish way, and tells her the only reason she’s alive is because of Olivia. He tells her she betrayed Olivia and she’s no longer a gladiator. She leaves and returns to Charlie who’s happy she came back because he thought she’d left him for good.
Jake goes to Olivia and gives her a long passionate kiss and then tells her goodbye. He tells her that he loved her, still loves her and no matter what happens after he walks out of that door she should remember that. He also tells her not to underestimate the president. Olivia calls her father to try to get answers out of him about why he kept her mother locked up and it a secret from her. He tried the “Sunday dinner” thing on her but she wasn’t having it. He told her she’d never know the answers to those questions, at least not from him and they say their goodbyes. He walks into his office to find Jake behind his desk. He asks what’s going on and Jake reveals that he’s the new commander of B613, quoting Rowan’s earlier words to Fitz about B613 not being on man and that if one man is cut down another will grow in his place. He tells him if he wants a job there he needs to get in line. He then calls Fitz and tells him it’s done and it’s reveals that they’re working together and Fitz set the whole thing up.
But that’s not all, we end with Olivia getting a phone call from her mother. We found out a little earlier that the plane never landed in Hong Kong but at another location where Mama Pope shot everyone in the head and escaped. Olivia asks where she is, but she tells her she knows Olivia hates her and she’s sorry; she just wanted to hear her voice one more time. She then tells her that they will see each other soon then hangs up and the camera pans out and we see that Mama Pope is in front of the White HOuse and is actually in Washington.
Some takeaways…
– That was a good winter finale! I am so bummed that we have to wait until February for the rest of the season. I was wishing for the Mama Pope storyline to finish, but I kind of knew that it wouldn’t and it would be dragged out a little longer. I’m actually okay with that.
– From the previews for the rest of the season it looks like we’re going to get some more development on Harrison! I am the most excited about this. I have been waiting for his storyline all season.
– I’m not sure how everything will be when we return in a couple of months. I know all of the ish is going to hit the fan once Olivia finds out about Jake. I’m not quite sure what will happen with Quinn since Rowan is no longer command. It’s going to get interesting and messy and I can’t wait.
New episodes return February 27 along with recaps the following Friday after it airs!
Until then, let me know what you thought about the winter finale below!
