SPOILER ALERT! (stop reading if you don’t want to know what happens in this episode)
We’re back, we’re back, we’re really really back. Go head, go head, go go go head! Okay, now that that’s out of my system, welcome back Arrowheads! Arrow returned with a vengeance and got right into the swing of things. Let’s start from the beginning.
Oliver, or Arrow, has been tracking down local drug lords to figure out who is the person behind the stone mask. We learn that five weeks have passed and Felicity is in Central City with Barry who is in a coma after being electrocuted on the last episode. Oliver is freaked out about the Mirakuru getting out and Roy has yet to show any signs of being effected by the shot, at least to his knowledge.
Laurel is not only dating, but investigating Sebastian Blood’s past; while Oliver and Sebastian have developed a sort of friendship. We’re then introduced to …, a souvenir shop owner on an anti-government crusade who is going around blowing parts of the city up because of a “corrupt government”. Felicity returns to help Oliver and Diggle out with tracking the bomber down.
Laurel approaches Sebastian and tells him about Cyrus Gold. Sebastian tells her he was a preacher at the orphanage where he was raised and was like an older brother. He also tells her that his father was shot by his mother after he returned home drunk and abusive, but she disappeared before police showed up. When he steps out of the office she gets the name of a patient off of an invoice on his desk (sneaky Laurel).
Thea tries to talk to Roy about what’s been bothering him lately. She asks if she’s the problem and he tells her she’s not, she’s the only thing keeping him together. They start to passionately make out and bump into the shelf which sends a box of glass crashed down puncturing Roy in the arm.
Arrow meets with Officer Lance to get a sample of what was collected from the scene of the blast. Officer Lance then asks for a favor asking him to get cell phone records of all the cops in the precinct because he suspects there’s a leak in the department. As they’re talking, another blast goes off. Felicity tracks the area and sends Oliver after him. The bomber throws out distractions and Oliver loses him, Felicity also loses his signal and once she regains it, it’s the wrong one and they lose him. Oliver gets upset and blames Felicity telling her her heads not in the mission but back in Central City.
Sebastian decides to hold a unity rally and Oliver, as Arrow, pays him a visit to try to get him to change his mind. Of course he doesn’t listen. Felicity connects the bomb remnants to an anti-government group, hacks into their message board and tracks the IP address of a local Starling City souvenir shop owner. Diggle heads to the rally while Oliver heads to the shop where he finds himself in a bit of a sticky situation.
The shop has been rigged and any wrong move by Oliver will blow the place up. With some assistance from Felicity they figure out the bomb is controlled by the local wires and with great precision Oliver shots an arrow at a fuse box cutting out the power. Meanwhile, Diggle searches the rally grounds and finds a detonator in one of the speakers. He’s quickly joined by Felicity and they attempt to disarm it, but Shrewd shows up and demands they stop. Diggle goes after him and he shoots him in the shoulder. Oliver shows up just when Shrewd throws a bomb and Oliver stops it midair with an arrow. He then goes after him and just as they end up face to face Shrewd holds up a detonator and tells Oliver if his finger goes off the button the entire place will blow up. Oliver says okay, shoots an arrow into the detonator in his pocket then knocks Shrewd out.
During the whole scuffle, a light pole begins to fall on Moira and Roy jumps of her stopping it with his back. Thea sees him lift it up effortlessly and pull her mom to safety. She later questions him about it but he credits it to adrenaline. Felicity and Oliver call a truce and Oliver sends Felicity back to Central City to be with Barry.
Laurel tracks the name on the invoice, with help from her father, to a women in a psych ward. She asks the lady if she knows who Sebastian is. After some coercing the lady reveals that she’s not crazy and Sebastian lied to everyone because she saw him kill his father in cold blood and also calls him the devil. Laurel then figures out that the woman is actually Sebastian’s mother.
Oliver then pays Sebastian one more visit as the arrow to talk to him about the rally. Sebastian tells him that they both want the same thing, and that’s to save the city. Sebastian tells him they can do it together and they shake on it.
Some takeaways…
– Can we talk about how short of an appearance Laurel has been making this season so far. After the whole Tommy/drug thing at the beginning of the season she’s been pretty scarce. It was nice seeing her more this episode, but I want to see more Laurel; more sane Laurel.
– We’re still hearing about Barry so I’m hoping we get another episode or two where he actually makes an appearance since we pretty much know that once he wakes up from his coma he’ll be Flash.
– I’m not sure what we really learned from the flashback scenes, other than this Mirakuru effects the mind and Slade had a hard time controlling his emotions.
– Next week it looks like definitely Laurel and maybe Oliver turn on Sebastian. The preview was intense and quick, but I’m ready for it. I especially can’t wait for when Oliver finds out Slade is still alive, but that probably won’t happen until way later in the season.
