SPOILER ALERT! (stop reading if you don’t want to know what happens in this episode)
We are back and they weren’t planning to hold anything back. Talk about a whirlwind. I don’t know about you, but this seemed to be the fastest moving episode thus far. Well, let’s get into this recap.
We start off with news that despite murdering her husband, Sally Langston still plans to run as a 3rd party candidate Leo and thinks she’s still going to remain the Vice President. We also find out that Olivia and Fitz are still very heavily involved with each other and can’t keep their hands off of each other; which is convenient since Liv is his campaign manager.
Mellie, Fitz, Cyrus and Olivia try to figure out what to do, but Fitz is drunk and stubborn and has chosen a new Vice President; Andrew Nichols. David somehow gets a copy of Sally confessing killing her husband and plays it for James who refuses to be apart of him trying to bring them down, saying his loyalties are now to his husband.
Harrison, who’s pretty shaken up, calls David to convince him to look into how Adnan Salif is able to get back into the country. Jake, as new Command, is conducting agent sit downs and asks Charlie about Quinn. He tells Charlie that she’s not and never will be B613 and Charlie tells him he won’t have any problems from him.
Confident that Nichols is the wrong choice for Vice President, OPA launch a full investigation into his history. Olivia finds out from Cyrus about Jake being the new Command and she goes to her father who she finds at a memorial park where he used to take her when she was little. She tries to tell him about how she knows about him being replace and Rowan goes off. He tells her how she knows nothing, how he had to sit through Fitz telling him how he was screwing her while her mother, the terrorist, was cleared air space. How the married man that she’s screwing defiled the very organization that he gave his soul to build.
He tells her she better run because he’s Fitz worst kind of enemy and the greatest weapon he has is his daughter Olivia. He guarantees that Fitz won’t make it to the end of his term, that she should grieve but first run.
A reporter starts receiving anonymous tips about Daniel’s death from someone with an alias Publius, and how she should look more into getting information on the cause of death and the autopsy report. Meanwhile Abby and Leo are having what appears to be a televised debate on Sally and her recent announcement. During the debate, Leo brings up Olivia being Fitz mistress again and Abby is completely caught off guard. This causes a media frenzy with every media outlet trying to pin her as Fitz mistress.
Wanting to change the story and find dirt on Sally, Olivia takes the information about digging into Daniel’s autopsy to OPA. Sally, still in denial and blaming the devil for her killing her husband, she thinks that their in over their head. Leo pays Cyrus a visit to make sure that the information about Daniel’s death stays under wraps. Cyrus calls Charlie, who with Quinn, to hire them to take care of the problem.
They kidnap the coroner’s son as ransom to make sure she sticks to the script when Abby and Huck pay her a visit asking about Daniel’s autopsy and how he died. She tells them a fabricated story about how he slipped in the bathroom and hit his head. James goes to Cyrus to try to find out why there wasn’t an autopsy for Daniel but Cyrus demands he drop it. Cyrus tells Mellie that she needs to take care of the story surrounding Fitz and his mistress so she invites Olivia to lunch with lots of press and paparazzi conveniently around. She gives her a list of eligible bachelors and tells her she needs to pick one and play off the relationship publicly so that people will stop thinking that she’s Fitz mistress.
David updates Harrison telling him that deportation is not an option and that Adnan is for sure re-entering the states. Abby finds Harrison with her gun and Harrison tells her about Adnan Salif and how he’s out to kill him.
Olivia meets with Nichols to try to further confirm why he isn’t the best choice for Vice President to no avail. Olivia pays Fitz a visit to try to step down as campaign manager, but Fitz refuses to let her. She tells him Nichols stats are good but she still doesn’t agree with him as the choice for VP. She also tells him about her lunch with Mellie and the list of bachelors and he tells her she won’t be dating anyone. With a passionate kiss, he tells her he refuses her resignation, that he won’t lose her again and that he can’t win without her. She asks why he made Jake command and he tells her that he’s the only one he trusts in that position with all of his secrets. Olivia decides to stay.
Harrison gets a visit from an unidentified woman (Adnan Salif??!) who automatically starts kissing him. He’s scared at first but barely stops her and they start making out and we all know what that leads to.
Cyrus finds Leo in his office who is there to find out about what’s being done about the leak. Unbeknownst to them the office is bugged and David and James are listening in. We find out that James bugged the office and is the leak. David warns him that if they find out who the leak is they will kill him.
Jake visits Olivia at her home and she asks him why he took the position as Command. He tells her he took his orders and he believes he can turn the organization around. She asks for Quinn back, but he tells her that he doesn’t have her. Olivia goes on a spiel about the republic and how Vermont keeps getting further away. She makes a deal with Jake to be her love interest for her public relationship. Fitz thinks it’s a bad idea but Olivia insures it’s the only way she can stay.
At the announcement of the new Vice President we find out that there may be some history between Mellie and Nichols and Olivia knows. We also see Leo meeting with Rowan so something not good is up on that front.
Some takeaways…
– This was a great start back for the second half of the season. We got a lot of questions and very few answers. I want to see how the Sally story plays out. I’m pretty sure the information about her killing Daniel will come to light crushing her chances of running. I also want to see how Rowan ties into all of this.
– I’ve been saying all season that we need some Harrison development. We got a vague taste of it, but I’m pretty sure we’re in for an interesting ride finding out about his past and who exactly Adnan Salif is and why he’s afraid of her nor can resist her.
– What is going on with Quinn? I so want someone, anyone to save her from Charlie. I’m pretty sure we’ll see Olivia stepping into that role once she gets from under Fitz and his scandals.
– I’m still not a fan of Olivia and Fitz and hope that this public relationship with Jake turns into something; at least for a little while.
