SPOILER ALERT! (stop reading if you don’t want to know what happens in this episode)
It was a very emotional episode last night and it all starts with who got shot? Check out that and even more in the recap below!
We start right where we left off. We see Jake shoot the two women the head towards James & David, but James turns to run and David shoots him. He goes to shoot David but tells him he likes him and if he cooperates he’ll live.
Cyrus is not taking the news of James death well. He insists that he works to deal with the pain. Meanwhile, Olivia has Huck looking into who killed James. Huck goes into the safe and notices the Daniel Douglas files are missing. He checks the security footage he installed and the safe and sees that Quinn is the one who took the files. He takes his findings to Olivia who immediately makes the connection to B613.
She confronts Jake and he tells her he did it for the republic, he then admits that he was the one who killed James and not one of his “soldiers”. Olivia is devastated, like literally shocked to pieces. She calls her father and has him meet at the place where he used to take her when she was a little girl. She asks him for just a few minutes if he could just be her dad.
She tells him about Sally killing Daniel and Jake killing three people including James to cover it up. She tells him that she feels like it’s not worth being the white hat when everyone you love is evil. Rowan goes into one of his great monologues and tells her that he’s responsible for killing 183 people. He tells her when you become Command it’s like you’re playing the hand of God. He tells her that no matter what he does he will always live with that and that no matter what Jake has done he will have to live with that.
He says that there is a need for white hats because someone is worth saving. Olivia asks who and he tells her everyone. He says you have to be the one to drag everyone out of the darkness and into the light. That’s the point and he would thing that’s the point of Olivia.
We get to see some flashbacks of Cyrus and James relationship and how they met. James approached him on Fitz campaign and completely called him out as being gay. Cyrus tried to deny it but eventually gives into James. They date, but Cyrus doesn’t want to make their relationship public because he’s supposed to be Republican and straight. He goes to Fitz and tells him that he’s in a relationship with a reporter. Fitz asks him if he’s in love and Cyrus says he is and Fitz says that’s all that matters. Fed up, Cyrus puts their relationship out in the public at the Grant’s first State Dinner by dragging him into the ballroom and making him dance with him.
Everywhere else, Mellie and Andrew have gone to meet with the NRA ahead of Sally after finding out that she planned to meet with them. Mellie makes a deal that if Fitz makes a speech supporting them that they will side with their side. Cyrus thinks it’s a bad idea and suggests they use James death as a way to get the support they’re looking for. They do and Fitz approval rating goes up. Taking their minds off of Fitz speech, Mellie and Andrew get pissy drunk, start making out which leads to sexual intercourse.
Adnan Salif and Mama Pope meet with two guys about some money for someone who Mama Pope is trying to meet with. Mama Pope pulls out a gun and shoots one of the guys, telling the other one she expects to meet with his boss. Realizing that she may be in over her head, Adnan goes to Harrison but quickly backs out after feeling like she was being followed.
Quinn returns home and senses that Huck is there. She calls out his name and he comes out of the shadows. She asks if he’s there to pull more teeth and he tells her he’s there to kill her. They both draw their guns, but Huck gets Quinn against the wall. He tells her that he had surveillance in the safe and that he realized how good she was because he trained her. He knew that since he trained her she would’ve never let her self get caught on camera.
He believes she did it so that he would see because she’s in too deep with B613. Quinn spits in his face, there’s a slight struggle and then Huck goes in for her mouth and we witness one of the sloppiest, passionate and kind of disgusting kisses. Quinn pushes him off and tells him that he can’t say she’s not a gladiator one day then say that she is and expect her to come back. She then kicks him out.
David is not handling Jake’s instructions well. He hesitates processing the guy that Jake framed for the murder. Jake pays him a visit and tells him that he let him live and he needs to do his part or there will be consequences. Sensing that something is up with David Abby continuously pressures him into telling her what’s going on. He finally breaks down and tells her.
Abby, Huck and Harrison all come to Olivia at the same time with their separate issues and how they need to help David, Adnan and Quinn. Olivia goes to David and talks to him about James death. He tells her that he can’t bring himself to put an innocent man in jail. Olivia tells him that going against Jake is a suicide mission and Jake is not the problem, B613 is. She tells him to lose this battle but help her win the war.
Olivia goes and tells Cyrus that they’ve processed someone for James murder and that a statement has been prepared for the press. Cyrus insists on doing it himself against Olivia’s instructions. He goes to the podium and begins the statement but breaks down to the point where everyone is silent and you can kind of see that everyone feels for him. Fitz comes out and escorts him off the stage and Olivia takes his place. After trying to compose herself and get her bearings, she continues reading the press statement as everyone at OPA and Jake watches from their respective televisions.
We end the episode back at the crime scene as Jake puts the two women in his trunk. He returns to James who’s still barely alive and he turns him over. He tells him that he wanted to make his death quick but it needed to look like an amateur car robbery. James tries to speak and Jake tells him that his daughter will be taken care of and nothing will happen to her. He tells him that he’s going to stay by his side until he dies so won’t die alone; and he does just that.
Some takeaways…
– The last 5-10 minutes were the most emotional scenes of this entire series; like I literally cried. I could see and feel for everyone involved on all angles, but Cyrus Beene’s breakdown did me in.
– I see OPA helping Adnan because I don’t think she is equipped to handle Mama Pope. I also think that Quinn will eventually find her way back to OPA, maybe not immediately, but I do see that coming because there is a lot going on between her and Huck. I honestly can’t predict anything for Jake at the moment, but Fitz is definitely going to find out about her and Andrew.
– Next week the baby Grants return home and from the previews they are total messes themselves. I can’t wait!
