SPOILER ALERT! (stop reading if you don’t want to know what happens in this episode)
We’re two weeks in and things are starting to feel a little more familiar. We’re kind of back to our weekly cases. Read this week’s recap below!
We open with Olivia and Jake on a run and he tells her that he’s got a hotel room for booty calls because he won’t live with her and wait on her beck and call when he has his own things to take care of. She then meets with Cyrus, now a vegetarian, and he blackmails her into helping the White House. He tells her that if she doesn’t help he’ll tell Fitz that she’s pining for him and calls everyday.
She goes to James and Lisa Elliott’s house, a high profile couple who was supposed to be going to the State of the Union but didn’t get on the plane. We find out that they pretty much want to kill each other. She tells them that the president needs them to be at the speech because they’re the face of it and he will need them there when he talks about it.
Fitz is with Mellie who spends her free time at her son’s grave eating chips and air hugging her son, not realizing that she’s being snapped by the paparazzi. Abby holds a press conference to address the rumors surrounding Mellie.
Jake meets with David and wants to try to figure out what really happened to Harrison. David is hesitant but he eventually agrees. Quinn tries to talk to Huck about the Millers and he is not about it. Olivia makes an appearance on a news show and uses a line that Cyrus told Abby to use and she gets upset telling Olivia to mind her own business and worry about Huck and Quinn.
Fitz tries to talk to Mellie about how she’s being portrayed in the media but she won’t listen. He gives up and Cyrus steps in and expresses his feelings about losing James. Mellie doesn’t believe it’s the same as losing a son and tells him that she’s done putting on for the cameras.
Olivia believes that Jake is being a lunatic and should just come to her place instead of paying for a hotel room. He tells her that he’s not her boyfriend and he’s not going to pretend to be a kept man– therefore he’s only available for booty calls.
Lizzy pressures, or blackmails, Cyrus into making David decline the Attorney General position. He tells David that he can’t have the job and David gets upset and finds inspiration from Olivia.
Huck and Quinn are watching the Millers at their hotel and Huck and James bond over beers. Quinn gets upset and drags him into the bathroom and they start arguing leaving James and Lisa alone. Lisa ends up stabbing James in the leg with a corkscrew. Olivia shows up and asks them what happened. Quinn gets upset and tells her to ask Huck before walking away. She asks him what’s going on between them and he’s clearly upset but tells her that everything is fine.
David blackmails one of the senators and he gets his endorsement for Attorney General. Meanwhile, Abby tells Cyrus that the Millers might not make the address, but he tells her that he’s not concerned because Olivia will take care of it. She asks him if he’s not a little bit concerned and he tells her that he’s more concerned with Mellie derailing Fitz second term, among other things, but not in Olivia failing.
Olivia tells the Millers that they need a divorce. She tells them that she can help them so that the public stays on both of their sides. Abby takes it upon herself to go talk to Mellie. Mellie shoos her away, but Abby gives her some tough love and tells her to pretty much suck it up because plenty of people have lost their children but they only get a short amount of time to grieve. She gives her some other very poignant examples before apologizing and leaving.
Olivia escorts the Millers to the White House and has her first interaction with Fitz since her return. He asks for the room and only wants to know what she thinks of his speech. She doesn’t think it’s a good idea but he tells her that she at least owes him that much.Of course she reads it and tells him to talk about Mellie grieving and to be honest about it.
During his speech he tells them about what’s going on with his family and that everyone is dealing with it in their own way. Mellie actually showed up to the State of the Union, thanks Abby, and she gets a standing ovation. He then ties his son’s death into gun laws and wraps it all up with a nice bow. Immediately following the speech Mellie breaks down and Fitz is there to console her.
Jake hacks into the footage of a restaurant where Harrison supposedly had dinner before he died and finds Charlie at the table not Harrison and Adnan. He’s interrupted by Olivia who’s pretty much horny and they do the deed. Cyrus also gets himself little action with a guy that he met at a bar. We quickly find out that the guy is a prostitute… Cyrus decides not to go through with it and the prostitute and we find out that he was hired by Lizzy so it’s all a setup.
Some takeaways…
– Not going to lie, this was an okay episode. I do like that we’re sort of kind of getting back to our weekly cases.
– I was happy to see that Huck show a glimmer of emotion. I feel like just about everyone is holding onto something and we just need to have one big therapy session.
– I was glad that Abby’s speech helped Mellie somewhat, but I think we have a little ways to go before she’s back to 100% (or close to).
– My favorite person this season so far is Jake. He stay putting Olivia in her place and he doesn’t take anyone’s bs.
