I have seen a lot of movies this year and if you’ve been following our Glam DEETS podcast then you’re probably familiar with our Movie Spotlights. To end the year I thought I’d share my personal favorite, and not so favorite, movies of 2014. Before we get into my picks, I thought I’d mention that while I’ve seen plenty of movies this year I haven’t seen everything. The Theory of Everything, Imitation Game, Whiplash and Birdman are still on my list of movies to watch before awards season rolls around. I’m sure at least two of them would probably be on this list, but we’ll just give them honorable mention for now. See which movies, in no particular order, made my must-watch list below!

The Best

So I saw the movies that were still on my list of movies to see before awards season officially kicked off and now I have to add two of them to my list.

Whiplash

whiplash miles teller j.k. simmons
Starring Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons this movie is magnetic from start to finish. I literally wanted it to never end. The ending is freaking mesmerizing. I was so wrapped up in the storyline, the music, the performance– I honestly don’t know how both Teller and Simmons aren’t nominated. Simmons has gotten a few nominations for Best Supporting Actor but Teller definitely delivered a strong performance as well.

The Imitation Game

imitation game benedict cumberbatch keira knightly
At first I was hesitant about this movie because I didn’t really quite know what it was about and from the trailers I wasn’t that interested in seeing it. After hearing all of the Oscar buzz surrounding it I took the plunge. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch this movie is based on true events involving Alan Turing. Trust, you’ll be Googling to find out everything there is to know about Turing his story and his work.

Boyhood

boyhood ethan hawke ellar coltrane
This movie chronicling a young boy’s journey from childhood to young adulthood is a slow burn that will keep you engaged from beginning to end. Starring Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and Ellar Coltrane this is one three hour movie filmed over a 12 year period is one that won’t have you looking at your watch waiting for it to end.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

I’ve talked about my love for this movie since it’s release during the spring. Starring Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson this film turns S.H.I.E.L.D. upside down, packing intense action with many twists and turns.

Gone Girl

gone girl ben affleck rosamund pike
Now I have my issues with the ending of this book. I hated the beginning, loved the middle and wanted to burn the book once I got to the end. The same could be said for the movie but to see this twisty tale starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike unfold in real time is pretty freaking awesome.

Guardians of the Galaxy

guardians galaxy chris pratt zoe saldana
Honestly, going into this movie I wasn’t expecting much but boy was I wrong. Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper and Dave Bautista, this movie packs just the right amount of comedic elements to make this a must-see for all ages.

Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow

edge tomorrow tom cruise emily blunt
This was supposed to be a total bomb but this movie surprised the ish out of me. Starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt this action packed film will take you on a ride that will leave you trying to figure out if we just ended up back where we started.

Nightcrawler

nightcrawler jake gyllenhal
This skin crawling thriller starring Jake Gyllenhal will make you look at your local news differently. No lie, you’ll probably finish this movie feeling a little bit dirty.

Snowpiercer

snowpiercer chris evans tilda swinton
Starring Chris Evans, this was another one that snuck up on me. I will warn you, it’s pretty graphic and intense but I personally was hooked from the beginning until the end.

The Fault in Our Stars

fault stars shailene woodley ansel elgort
Remember how I said I don’t really like romance dramas? Starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, this young adult movie is definitely an exception. I don’t care how hard you think you are you will cry by the end… like ball.

The Maze Runner

maze runner dylan o'brien
As soon as Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) comes up in The Box (caged elevator) you are hooked from beginning to the end. If you want to watch one of the better young adult books turned into a movie this year, this is definitely your best bet.

Two Night Stand

two night stand miles teller
It’s no secret that romantic dramas and comedies are my least favorite genres. If it’s one rom-com that got it right this year it’s Two Night Stand. Starring Miles Teller and Analeigh Tipton, this tale of two strangers trapped together during a snowstorm will bring on some laughs.

The Worst

Now for the not so great movies. This year was not the year for romantic drama movies. This list also includes a couple of the biggest disappointments for me this year. Check out these skip-worthy movies below!

Endless Love

endless love ryan pettyfer gabriela wilde
Starring Ryan Pettyfer and Gabriela Wilde, this movie is the definition of why romantic dramas are not my favorite genre. A recycled, unrealistic story that’s just plain sappy.

The Best of Me

best me james marsden michelle monaghan
I wanted this to work so badly I really did. Starring Michelle Monaghan and James Marsden (two actors I actually enjoy) this was another recycled story with a predictable ending that left me very unsatisfied and disappointed.

The Giver

giver brenton thwaites meryl streep
I was beyond excited about this movie, so much so that I read the book again right before seeing it. Starring Brenton Thwaites, Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges and Katie Holmes, this was the biggest letdown of the year. What was supposed to be an inspiring, boundary pushing film turned into a teenage love story with a not so great plot pace.

Transcendence

transcendence johnny depp morgan freeman
Starring Johnny Depp and Morgan Freeman, this movie will only leave you irritated. This was another movie I was excited to see due to the trailers and I was left with so much disappointment.
