SPOILER ALERT! (stop reading if you don’t want to know what happens in this episode)
So I really enjoyed this episode! I’m really liking how Laurel’s arc is shaping up. From Hong Kong, to the mountains to Starling City it was a jam packed episode. Read the recap below!
In Hong Kong, Oliver and Maseo are at a club trying to find Tatsu but their cover is blown (so Oliver thinks) and their taken to a room. Oliver finds out that Maseo made a deal with China White to give her the Alpha in exchange for Tatsu. He hands over the serum but she tests it first and finds out that it’s a fake. She tells her men to kill them but they fight them off and barely escape. They return home and Maseo tells him that Waller must have switched the serums. He then tells him that there is nothing that he wouldn’t do for his family. Tatsu then thanks Oliver for saving her life.
A City in Disarray
We start off with Oliver and Felicity’s last conversation before he left to fight Ra’s al Ghul except it’s a dream that Oliver is having and he tells her that he’ll stay. When he goes to kiss her he starts bleeding from the mouth. He wakes up and we see he’s in pretty bad shape– which is to be expected. Tatsu has him on a concoction of herbs and penicillin to help fight the infection he has… among other things. We find out that Tatsu and Maseo haven’t been in contact with each other for reasons we don’t know of yet. Maseo tells him that once the storm passes he’ll be leaving but Oliver tells him if Ra’s finds out he saved him he’ll kill him. He tells him not to worry about him but about his city and what it’s become without him.
We cut to Starling City and a young girl is being chased by a guy. Laurel steps in to try to save her but gets cut and Roy shows up to save her ass. He stitches her up back at the lair and Roy tells her that this is not the way to deal with what’s going on with her. Diggle walks in and tells her that she shouldn’t be running around as Black Canary but Laurel tells him that they fear her. He tells her that she’s not Sara and she tells him she’s not here anymore before leaving.
Ray is still trying to subtly convince Felicity to help him but she’s not biting while Malcolm confronts Thea about not packing up to leave the city. He tells her that they’re in great danger but she wants to know what’s going on and won’t leave until he tells her what’s going on. Meanwhile, the police are trying to figure out how to take down Brick who has been on a killing spree for the past week. Ray and Felicity show up to suggest they call in the National Guard but Brick interrupts them kidnapping three aldermen and trying to kill the rest. Laurel, Ray and Detective Lance fight them off, barely, and escape with bruises but the aldermen are already gone.
Back in the mountains, Oliver tries to convince Tatsu that she should keep Maseo from returning to the League. She tells him that it’s his choice and alludes that that’s he way of coping with grief. Back in Starling City, Detective Lance asks Felicity why they weren’t saved by Arrow and she tells him that he’s gone. He tells her that Sara is back but she tells him that she doesn’t know anything about that. Using her power of authority, Laurel threatens to lock up a suspect with a confession that he killed a major crime lord and he breaks and
Roy confronts Malcolm about Thea and tells him to stay away from her. He tells him that once Thea finds out the truth about Sara, and she will, she won’t forgive him. Malcolm tells him that it’s a family matter and he’s not family. Felicity patches up Ray following the attack and he tells her that he was approaching the whole ATOM thing wrong and now he’s only concerned about protecting those he cares for… meaning her.
Laurel and Roy are about to go save the aldermen when Diggle walks in and tries to stop Laurel from going out there. Laurel tells him she’s going no matter what and Diggle tells him to stay close to her. They attack the fans and she opens the back of the van to try to let out the hostages but Brick attacks her from the side. He grabs her by the neck and throws her down and jumps in the van as it drives away. Roy tries to stop him and shoots him in the shoulder with an arrow. Brick tells him he made a big mistake and kills one of the hostages.
News footage of Arsenal and Black Canary trying to save the aldermen is on every channel, including the assassination of one of the alderman. Brick calls the mayor’s office and demands that she meets with him if she wants the aldermen to live. Meanwhile, Malcolm goes to Thea’s apartment and tells her about Ra’s al Ghul and that he’s after him and will kill his family which is why he wants her to leave with him. Laurel is watching the coverage of the alderman who was killed when Felicity shows up to talk to her about Black Canary. Laurel tells her that she thought being her would make the pain less and that she’s not putting back on the mask. Felicity tells her that it’s not about Sara or Oliver, but about those they care about who are still alive.
At the meeting, Ray is there along with Detective Lance and heavy police protection. Brick tells her that she has 24 hours for the police to evacuate the Glades if she wants the remaining aldermen to live. If they don’t evacuate he will kill them. Detective Lance calls Felicity and tells her that they need help. He asks if Arrow is really gone. She tells him that he is but that she may be able to find Black Canary.
Back in the mountains, Maseo gets ready to leave since the storm has passed. Tatsu tells him that she still loves him no matter what he believes he deserves. Maseo sees some of Ra’s men through the window and Oliver and Tatsu hide. He tells them that he didn’t find Oliver’s body only footsteps meaning he must’ve escaped. One of the men pulls back a curtain and reveals Tatsu. She hits him and Maseo very quickly kills the rest of the men.
Roy is upset about being the reason the alderman died. Diggle tells him that it’s not his fault and they share a drink toasting to Oliver. Roy tells him that they can’t do it without Oliver but Felicity and Laurel arrive and tells them that there are still people who need their help. Laurel calls her father with her voice disguised as Sara’s to try to find out more information about the hostages. He tells her about one of the man’s pacemaker and Felicity is able to track them down while Roy and Laurel gear up. Felicity goes to Ray and asks him for his helicopter and he reluctantly lets her borrow it.
Diggle, Roy and Laurel use it to fly to where Felicity tracked the pacemaker.Roy and Laurel go in and they’re going tit for tat with Brick’s guys. They reach the aldermen and let them go. As they’re escaping Brick shows up and starts shooting and Laurel ends up left behind. She leads Brick to a room where she gets a few punches and kicks in before jumping through the window and grabbing the ladder on the helicopter escaping.
Over with Oliver, Maseo disposes of the bodies so that they’ll never be found. He tells them that he still plans to leave but Oliver tells him that he can go back to Starling City with him.
Laurel talks to Detective Lance dressed as Black Canary and he tells her that the mayor is still pulling people out of the Glades. He asks her to have dinner with him so they can talk about it but she tells him she can’t. He asks her what’s going on and she tells him she’ll tell him about it soon before leaving. Meanwhile, Thea tells Malcolm that she’s not leaving. She asks him why he won’t stay and fight since no matter where they go they’ll be in danger. She tells him that she’s not afraid of Ra’s because her father taught her not to be afraid of anyone and that they should stay and fight– and he agrees.
Felicity returns the helicopter to Ray and tells him that his suit wasn’t working because he didn’t have a quantum processor. He tells her that he thought she wouldn’t help him and she tells him that he needs her help so he won’t die. Thea returns to her club to close up and the DJ boy is there. He tells her that he thought she was leaving town but she tells him that she’s not. He calls Maseo and tells him that Malcolm isn’t leaving and he tells him that he’ll tell Ra’s al Ghul.
Some takeaways…
– Again, I am so happy about Roy’s development. He has matured a lot in these last two episodes and I’m very glad to see him kicking some good ass.
– I’m actually okay with Laurel being Black Canary. I know there’s heavy debate on this subject and I’ve remained quiet but I’m breaking my silence. I think she looks amazing and she’ll get better and better as the series progresses.
– I don’t quite know how I feel about Felicity helping Ray. I do know that as far as a spinoff I think they should hold off for like another season or two. I don’t know, I just don’t want them to rush it.
– I’m ready for Oliver to return. I don’t think he’s 100% healed, but the city needs him and it looks like he’ll be back next week. I cannot wait to see everyone’s reaction when he shows up at the lair.
