SPOILER ALERT! (stop reading if you don’t want to know what happens in this episode)
So many good things happened this episode and I’m so excited about it that we’re just going to get right into this recap!
In Hong Kong Maseo wants them to go on the run since Waller knows he stole the serum. He tells Oliver to go to the press and tell his family that he’s alive. Oliver goes to the payphone to call his mother. As he’s leaving a message telling her he’s alive he’s attacked by a group of men and tries to fight them off before being stunned. Oliver wakes being water boarded and finds out that Waller had his message erased. She tells him that is she had made an announcement to the press they would’ve killed her. He tells her that she wouldn’t want the attention. She tells him that they could always go after his sister who is battling substance abuse. He tells her to stay away from Thea and she tells him she will if she tells him where Maseo and his family is. He relents and tells her that they’re on their way back to Shanghai.
Oliver is tied up when the guards throw in Maseo. He tells him that he gave him up and Maseo reveals that he lied about where they were going and only returned when he found out he’d been captured. Oliver tells him that was a stupid plan but he laughs it off and demands to see Waller when one of the guards return but the guard knocks him and Oliver out. When Oliver awakes, they’re in the car with Waller and he realizes they’re back in Starling City.
Oliver Finally Tells Thea
We open with Laurel fighting her sister Sara and they’re both dressed at Black Canary. Sara knocks her down and asks her why she’s trying to take her place. We go back 48 hours and we’re in the middle of a rainy roof chase. Arrow and Arsenal are chasing a guy when Laurel comes out of nowhere and beats him down. Upset, Oliver asks her what she’s doing and she tells him that she’s doing his job.
Oliver tells her she shouldn’t be out there, that something could happen to her. She tells him that it’s what a hero would do but he tells her he tells her she;s not a hero and suggest they stay out of each other’s way. Back at the lair Merlyn visits and tells Oliver that in order to protect Thea and defeat the League they need to bring her into the fold.
Wener Zytle is outside the courthouse talking to the press when Laurel comes to escort him to the van. The guards holding him start hallucinating then shooting the reporters. Laurel knocks him out but Zytle escapes.
At the club Oliver meets Thea and tells her that he has to show her something in the basement, that he lied about it being flooded. He turns on the light and reveals Team Arrow’s headquarters. He tells a stunned Thea that he lied all of this time to protect her. She tells him that all of those times she was upset at him for flaking he was actually out saving someone’s life. In a surprising move that totally shows how much she’s matured since season one, she thanks him and lovingly hugs him.
Back at their apartment, she tells him that there were so many times she wished she could thank Arrow for what he’s done for the city. She asks if their mother knew and she tells him she did as well as Malcolm. She asks why he’s telling her now and he tells her that Ra’s al Ghul is coming for all of them and they need to band together. Malcolm walks in and she yells at him for lying to her all of this time and trying to drive a wedge between them.
Felicity shows the team footage of what happened outside of the courthouse when Laurel shows up. She tells them that Zytle didn’t inject the guard but a report did. Oliver tells Felicity to find the address of the reporter as Laurel prepares to suit up. Oliver tells her she’s not going but she tells hi she is especially since she got them their only lead. He grabs her by the arm and tells her that they need to talk.
Oliver tells her that she’s using adrenaline to cover up her pain and compares it to a drug. Of course Laurel gets pissed and tells him he’s the one covering up pain before walking off. Arrow and Arsenal go to the reporters office and find him strapped to a bomb. Zytle told him he had to kill Arrow or he’d kill his wife. Oliver tries to convince him to hand over the detonator but he asks God to forgive him and lets it go leaving Oliver and Roy literally no time, like a literal split second, to jump out of the window.
Oliver returns home to find Thea awake and they talk about what he was out doing. She tells him that she doesn’t know how he goes out risking his life every night. He tells her it’s his job to protect the people of the city and it includes her. He tells her that they need Malcolm’s help to go up against Ra’s. He tells her that asks her to trust him but she tells him she can’t trust Malcolm and she won’t trust Malcolm.
Quentin brings Laurel some files she requested and asks her if she’s spoke to Sara lately. He tells her that Sin told him that the girl in black wasn’t her and that all he want to
Thea walks into the club to find Roy and she tells him about Oliver thinking they should trust and work with Malcolm. He asks her what she thinks and she tells him that she believes she should stay far away from him as possible. He tells her she should go with her gut then. Oliver walks up and asks to borrow Roy and they go down to the lair because one of their trackers went off by the docks. He tells them that he put a tracker on Laurel in case she did anything reckless which it looks like she is. He tells Roy to suit up and they head there to get her.
Laurel is on the dock and her cover is blown. Zytle comes up behind her and throws a needle laced with Vertigo at her neck. She sees Sara who tells her she’s an addict and not fit to take her place. They start to fight when Sara knocks her down. We see that it’s actually Zytle. He’s about to hit her one last time when Oliver knocks the baton out of his hand with an arrow. He takes off running as Oliver and Roy fight off his men. Oliver goes to follow him but hears Laurel screaming for someone to help her.
Oliver carries a bloody Laurel back to the lair. She’s still hallucinating, thinking she sees Sara when Oliver injects her with a serum. Thea walks in and Oliver tells her to leave. Roy tells him not to yell at her when he brought her into the fold. Thea tells him she can go but wants to know if Laurel is okay. He tells her she’s fine and to please go back upstairs. He quickly turns on Roy who tells him that he’s not the only one who can protect Thea. Felicity steps in and tells him that he was gone and he can’t just come back and expect them to fall into step because he says so. Oliver, realizing that he’s not needed, tells them to update him when Laurel wakes.
Thea runs into Chase and immediately kisses him. Thee go back to her place just as Roy sees them walking off. Back at her place, after doing the deed he offers her a glass of wine. Thanks to her father’s training she realizes that it’s laced with Cyanide. They start fighting when he gets the upper hand and holds a knife to her throat. Roy busts in and the two of them start fighting. Roy gets thrown down when Malcolm bursts through and shoots Chase in the shoulder with an arrow. Before they can get much of anything from him he drinks from a vial and collapses to his death as a horrified Thea looks on.
Diggle follows Oliver to the bar and tells him that he wasn’t just gone, he was dead. They were ready to hang it up but they realized it was bigger than them and it includes Laurel. He tells him that he created something that’s surpassed him but can he live with what it’s become. Laurel awakes and tells Felicity that she saw Sara calling her a fraud while she was under the influence of the Vertigo. Felicity tells her that Sara wore her masks to hide her .. and well as help people. She tells her that she should stop trying to be Sara because she has a light in her that Sara never had and maybe she should start trying to be herself. They’re interrupted when one of the drums Zytle stole GPS sends them a signal. Oliver and Diggle return to the basement and Felicity updates them on what’s going on but Diggle can’t get in touch with Roy. Oliver turns to Laurel but she tells him there’s nothing he can say to her. He tells her there is one thing.
Oliver glides into Zytle’s makeshift lab with Laurel in tow. He tells him that this ends now but Zytle sets the place on fire. Felicity tells him that the place will blow but Oliver stops to free the chained scientist while Laurel goes after Zytle. Zytle hits her again with another Vertigo needle and she sees Sara. They start fighting and then Sara transforms into Quentin who’s yelling at her about keeping Sara’s death from him. As Zytle is choking her the person changes between Sara and Quentin. She finally tells “Sara” that she’s done trying to be her when she gets the upper hand and punches the shit out of Zytle. When she looks up she sees a smiling Sara and then a rather proud Oliver. He tells Felicity it’s over but she tells him it’s not and he needs to get home to Thea.
Laurel goes to see her father at the office and tells him that she needs to tell him something; that she didn’t tell him because she was worried about his health. He tells her that he knows Sara is off somewhere fighting and but she tells him it’s not true. Quentin breaks down and they embrace each other. Oliver returns home and Thea tells him that she thought she was stronger, that she could keep herself safe. He asks who he was and Malcolm walks in and tells him he was one of Ra’s agent.
Thea tells Malcolm not to expect a thank you and he tells her that a parent doesn’t do things expecting a thank you. She realizes that they need Malcolm and tells him that she won’t forgive him. Malcolm tells him that in order for them to beat Ra’s they need to conquer their fears because that’s what Ra’s preys on. Oliver returns to the lair to tell the team that he’s leaving for a few days. He tells them that he trusts the city will be in good hands, Laurel included.
Roy goes to see Thea before she leaves and she kisses him on the cheek as a thank you for standing up to Oliver and saving her life. Oliver and Thea go back to The Island but Thea is over it. He tells her that she’ll get used to it, that he did and it used to be his home.
Some takeaways…
– Team Arrow has got themselves a pretty decent team. I cannot wait for the episode when we see the entire team fighting together. It’s going to be so amazing.
– Loved to see Roy stand up against Oliver. I just love his growth this season. I’m also really liking Thea’s growth.
– As much as I was irritated by Felicity last week she was back to being the Felicity I love. Maybe, just maybe, we need to forgo #Olicity for a while or for good… ijs.
– Next week we get Slade back! Thea and Oliver versus Slade or maybe just Oliver versus Slade, but either way it’s going to be freaking amazing!
