SPOILER ALERT! (stop reading if you don’t want to know what happens in this episode)
This was a flashback heavy episode that gave us a couple of familiar faces. It was also an episdoe filled with poignant character growth. Read the recap below!
Waller has brought Oliver and Maseo to Starling City to track down China White who’s trying to sell the Omega bio weapon during an auction. She’s using them because Peter Chang works for Queens Consolidated and he’s the person that she’s working with for the auction. She tells them that if they compromise the mission by contacting anyone she’ll immediately remove them. Oliver and Maseo track Peter Chang back to Queens Consolidated and Maseo tells him that he has to hack onto the company’s system to get the information about the auction. While outside the building he sees Thea and they follow her to a grave site where Oliver and their father’s tombstone is. While there a guy shows up and they see her make an exchange but Tommy shows up and intercepts and pretty much puts her in her place about her destructive behavior.
That night Oliver breaks into Queens Consolidated to put the tracking program into the system. While doing that a file belong to his shows up and he downloads it. As it’s downloading it he barely gets the chance to hide before Felicity shows up and he overhears her talking about how cute he is. They find out from Kane’s files when the auction is.
Oliver sneaks to the party that Tommy is having where we find Diggle working security. Laurel is also there talking to Tommy when Thea shows up. Her dealer is there and she buys drugs off of him before he goes upstairs. Oliver follows him upstairs and demands he stays away from his sister. The dealer recognizes him and goes to stab him but Oliver kills him snapping his neck.
The police show up and question everyone about how the drug dealer died and Detective Lance is obviously drunk. Once he sees Laurel is there he goes off on her because he believes Tommy is bad news then throws his insults at Thea. As Oliver is watching, Maseo shows up and puts a gun to his back telling him it’s time to go.
Maseo tells him he was stupid to come there and Oliver tells him that he has enough money that they should be able to take down Oliver. He tells him he’s making a stupid decision but he tells him his decision and tells him goodbye. Oliver returns to his house and grabs a sit since no one seems to be there. He finds a convenient tablet and puts the USB drive with the files he downloaded earlier in it and a video of his father plays with a message to him telling him about how he failed the city and he has a book with a list of people in it. He tells him he can right his wrongs and be better than him and save the city.
China White shows up at the auction with the Omega bio weapon and Maseo and his team are there but get taken out pretty quickly. They capture Maseo and are about to kill him when Oliver shows up and saves him. China White and Peter try to escape by car but Oliver shoots at it and they crash. He punches China White once she steps out of the car and tells Peter he has a choice to make and the wrong one will cost him his hand.
Oliver thinks his duties are over and he should be able to go home. Waller tells him it’s not up to her and a general shows up and tells him that he has to be debriefed back in China. He tells him once it’s done he’ll make sure he goes wherever he wants to go. We get a small scene between Tommy and Laurel and he invites her to dinner to talk about her job prospects and she agrees.
We’re back on the island and Oliver and Thea are constantly training and to Oliver’s surprise she’s really good. Thea wakes Oliver up after he sleeps calling out Sara’s name. She asks him why she didn’t tell him about her death and he tells her it was Laurel’s request and not his secret to keep. She asks about how she died and he avoids answering and goes off to take a walk. He goes down to where Slade is being held captive to find his cell open and the guard dead.
He runs off to look for him when he runs into Thea. He tells her they need to get off the island because Slade is missing. He gets a call from Malcolm who tells him that he let Slade loose to help him regain his killer instinct. They go to where Oliver buried their father and he gives her a gun. He realizes Slade has been there just as he comes out and attacks Oliver knocking him out.
He wakes up in a cell next to Thea and Slade tells them that two burned bodies will show up in Starling City and everyone will thinks they’re dead. He tells Thea to ask him about Shado and that if Oliver had told the truth their mother would probably still be alive. He tells them that his going to leave the there like he left him in purgatory.
While trying to figure out how to escape captivity she asks him if Slade was lying about him still having secrets. As she’s yelling at him she says “tiny” and he realizes that the prison was made for grown men not small women. In order for them to reach the switch to open the door he has to dislocate her shoulder so she can reach the switch. They run to try to intercept Slade before he gets on the plane they used to get there.
While running through the woods Thea trips one of Oliver’s hidden traps and he saves her getting a spike in the arm. She tells him they need to rest and while doing so she asks him again about Sara’s death. He tells her that Malcolm killed her using a drug to put the woman under the influence. Once she hears him say she she panics and asks him who she is and he tells her she killed Sara and of course she totally freaks out.
He explains to her that it’s not her fault, she wasn’t herself and she tells him he was right about Malcolm. During her speech/tirade Slade shows up and puts a gun to her head. Thea hits him a few times breaking free and Oliver goes for him. They’re fighting when Thea comes at him and they tag team him. While he has Oliver in a pretty rough position Thea hits him on the back with a log then turns the gun on him.
Oliver stops her and tells her she’s not a killer, this is just Malcolm’s plan to prove that she’s just like him; killing Sara was not her fault. She shoots Slade giving him a flesh wound and they put him back behind bars. Slade tells Oliver she’s been touched by darkness and he’s lost her just like he lost his mother and father. He also tosses Felicity’s name in for good measure asking him how many people can he use before he’s no longer Oliver Queen.
The Wrap Up
Laurel finds Quentin at Sara’s grave and she tells him that Dinah already knows. He tells her shouldn’t she be running around as the Black Canary and she tells him that he’s always know she was destined for that mask. He tells her that’s not the issue, the issue is she broke that trust and he doesn’t know how he’ll get through it. She suggests they go to an AA meeting and he tells her they’re going to different meetings.
Oliver and Thea return home and he asks her not to tell Laurel about Sara because she doesn’t even know about Malcolm. Malcolm appears and Thea confronts him about making her kill Sara and he tells her he did it because he cares about her (yea no). He tells her that they need to prepare to go against Ra’s al Ghul but she tells him to stop making excuses. She also lays down the law and tells him that she’ll help him go against Ra’s, she’ll be his soldier but she’ll never be his daughter again.
Some takeaways…
– I am really loving Thea! I’m pretty sure a lot of my recaps from last season expressed how much she got on my nerves but she’s really grown.
– It was nice seeing where most everyone in Oliver’s life at the moment was while he was “dead”. That Felicity scene was def the Felicity we all fell in love with.
– It looks like Thea is throwing daddy dearest under the bus next week and I can’t wait to see how that plays out.
