SPOILER ALERT! (stop reading if you don’t want to know what happens in this episode)
There were three separate stories running throughout the episode (per usual) which, if you weren’t paying attention, you probably would’ve never expected what we got in the end. Here’s the recap!
So Rowan is back and got the wine glasses out for Olivia telling her he has a problem and she’s a fixer so he needs her help. He tells her he’s giving her one chance to shut down the plan to take him down and she has 48 hours. If she doesn’t Fitz is coming down with him. Of course we get a good old fashioned monologue and tells her that her friends don’t know her, he does and she’d never let people get in the way of what’s right which is making sure the republic stays in tact. Olivia kicks him out just as Russell wakes up from whatever Rowan gave him to knock him out. Olivia tells the team and David thinks they need to fast track the trial so they all agree that they’re still going to go after Rowan.
Jake is giving his confession to David when he mentions the Remington mission. Jake tells him it was before he was apart of B613 and it was an order to shoot down a passenger plane. David needs the name of the pilot who shot the plane down and Jake tells him it was Fitz. Olivia returns home and calls Russell who shows up and tells her that he’s not a heavy drinker and a part of the night they were together is missing. He then tells her that he’s looking for something more stable. She tells him her life is complicated and with him, as Alex, she can be uncomplicated.
Passing the bill
At the White House the senate is voting on the Brandon Bill and Cyrus is geeked because he believes this bill will get them the black vote. The bill is in jeopardy of not passing and they need Susan to break the vote but she wants to read the bill front to back. Of course she has a lot of questions but Cyrus tells her that the country is waiting for her to vote. She tells him that if she votes without answers she’s voting no. He calls in David and tells him not to give her anything. Susan tells him that the bill reads as a bunch of requests and thinks they need to redistribute money so that they can do some of the things in the bill. David gives in and Mellie comes in to try to get Susan to vote who tells her that she knows Mellie’s plans to run for senate and she should read the bill if she plans to announce her run.
Twenty four hours later Fitz pays Susan a visit and tells her that her time is up. He calls her a fetus in the world of politics and that she doesn’t know what it takes to pass a bill like this. He tells her they need the bill now and tells her to go to the Hill and vote the way she’s supposed to. Susan bites back and tells him that the only reason she’s there is to help make real change, not be his lap dog. She tells him the bill is nothing but compromise and the only thing wasting time is the bill. They work together to make changes on the bill and Cyrus is pissed. They decided to announce Mellie’s campaign for senate to placate the press.
Mayoral race drama
Meanwhile Marcus Walker is running for mayor and is slightly up in the polls when he calls OPA to the mayor’s house where they find the mayor’s wife dead and Marcus covered in blood. He tells them that they were having an affair and heard someone come in. He went to hide and saw masked men came in and killed her. They decide to get rid of the body and make it look like she disappeared so Huck and Quinn dispose of it. Marcus thinks he looks like a hypocrite for sleeping with a white woman but Liv tells him she’s seen worse and she’s there to fix things. Jake shows up at the office just to tell Liv that he’s there and she can call on him whenever when she gets a call that Marcus has been arrested. Olivia reads the sheriff for bringing him in without arresting him and threatens to destroy them if news gets out that he was ever there since he was brought in illegally.
Huck tells them that Marcus email was hacked and it links back to the mayor’s office. Olivia tells him he needs to remember what happened that morning and he tells them he remembers hearing one of the guy’s being called Mickey. Watching news footage of the mayor the pinpoint Mickey to one of the mayor’s man who was wearing a bandage. They then a money trail to Mickey but can’t put the mayor away without an eyewitness confession. Marcus isn’t happy about announcing that he slept with the mayor’s wife and they make a deal with the mayor that he’ll announce he’s dropping out of the race. At the press conference Marcus goes rogue and announces that the mayor killed his wife and he won’t be the mayor based on a lie. Marcus gives his confession to the police and knows he’s pretty much done in politics. Olivia tells him he made the right choice and he’s not done.
At the end of it all, Rowan is back to see if Olivia is going to take his case and she tells him that she’s not. She tells him that the case against B613 is right because Jake, Huck and the republic deserve justice. Rowan applauds her for choosing to be a warrior and not run after Fitz and tells her that she’s now a worthy opponent. The team gathers for a drink and speech from David to toast to wearing a white hat. Jake goes to OPA thinking he got a text from Liv but is attacked by a masked person. They tussle before he gets the upper hand and unmasks him revealing Russell who Jake seems to know. Russell stabs him in the stomach before repeatedly stabbing him in the chest/abdomen area.
Some takeaways…
– No not Jake! Y’all know I’ve been team Jake since he came on the scene and am probably one of the few who never wanted to see him die. This one hurt and Scott Foley has been great on this show. He’ll be missed. (Oh how I wish we had a Lazarus Pit lying around somewhere)
– Rowan is not playing with Olivia anymore and I expect to see at least one more person die before the season ends.
– Russell was a little shady at the end of the previous episode then this one they tried to pull the wool over our eyes but alas he is working for Rowan which means Olivia can’t trust nobody. I mean, it’s pretty clear why she has so many guy issues.
