SPOILER ALERT! (stop reading if you don’t want to know what happens in this episode)
We’re three episodes in and we’re still riding the Olitz train. Just when you think you know what’s going to happen they go another way (or the same way if that’s what you’re feeling). Get into my dissection of this episode below!
Olivia gives them options to avoid a catastrophe but Fitz just wants to tell the truth and move on together. Abby is about two ticks from breaking and goes to talk to Mellie. She tries to convince her that the interview could work in her favor too but Cyrus interrupts because Mellie called him in as her chief adviser. He kicks Abby out and asks Mellie what she wants and she tells him that he wants to destroy Olivia but Cyrus tells her to think like a warrior because what she does next will define her career. He asks her again what she wants and she tells him she wants the Oval.
Lizzie reports back to Fitz that Cyrus is now involved and he’s working on some sort of a negotiation with Mellie. Fitz tries to strong-arm his way out of the door but Lizzie stands her guard. Meanwhile, OPA is getting slammed with with multiple calls. Jake has had it and pulls all of the phones off the hook. He reminds them that the only plan Liv had was the same she tells her clients – do not lie.
Cyrus brings Mellie’s negotiations that it will be a mutual divorce, he will support her run for the White House at any costs and Liv will not move into the White House nor a public relationship until she’s in the White House. Fitz is over Mellie and her demands but Liv tells him that she’s really not asking for much. Liv makes the statement that Cyrus is bringing a wedge between her and Abby but Abby has had it and tells her that she’s the one who lied to her face and left her to drown on the podium. Liv tells her that she didn’t want her to lie for her but Abby says she didn’t tell her because she didn’t believe she would be good enough at her job to handle it.
Abby takes Fitz counteroffer to Cyrus but he tells her that Mellie wants the family house and for Liv not to take Fitz last name. Abby takes it back to Fitz and Liv tells him to sign it while Lizzie is running around making a kill file on Liv. Cyrus gives the agreement to Mellie but she says no. Cyrus is flabbergasted because she got everything she asked for but she still wants more. She tells him that he’s lost his edge because he would’ve been a monster and gotten her what she deserved.
Noah is getting antsy because it’s getting close to cutting time and he hasn’t heard anything. Liv goes to Fitz and tells him that it’s over he should take her back and they’ll wait 18 months. He asks what Mellie said that made her decide to give up but she asks what she would be giving up on… them, herself and what she worked her entire life for. She asks him if he ever thought about what she would be giving up. Fitz finds Mellie on the balcony with her drink and apologizes for abandoning her. He pretty much sucked her dry to get to the White House and never said thank you so he thanks her right there. She tells him that he can’t just apologize and think she will go along with his interview. She asks what he ever sacrificed for her and he tells her that he believes that she will be the first woman to be sworn in as the president.
Abby finds Liv alone while looking for Fitz and she apologizes for lying to her. She tells her that she thinks she’s very good at her job and Abby credits that to Liv. Cyrus goes to Fitz and tells him he thinks it was a good idea to take his advice and with Mellie back they can focus on the rest of his term. He then asks for his job back so they can finish what they started. Fitz tells him he doesn’t work there anymore then dismisses him. He goes back to Mellie and tells her that he doesn’t think she got everything she asked for then tells her that she got played.
Fitz and Mellie walk into the interview as she flashes back to all of the sacrifices she made throughout his campaign and presidency. She stops outside the door then tells Fitz that she almost got him before running off. Fitz wants to give the interview himself but they tell him that there isn’t one without Mellie. Abby tells him to let her fix this and Liv tells him to let her do her job. After they leave she tells him that their going to go to the briefing room and throw her under the bus because they need a villain and it can’t be him. Fitz tries to go and stop her but she tells him to sit his ass down and watch her choose him.
We end with Papa Pope in jail and he gets a visit from Jake who asks if he saw the ticker on the news. He says Louvre won and Rowan says/asks Lazarus One and Jake nods he then says Niro fiddled while Rome burned. If you’re like me then you have no idea what they’re talking about.
Some takeaways…
- This was enough Olitz to last me an entire season. I don’t think I’ve been this happy to see Papa Pope because this episode seemed a little flat. It looks like things might get a bit more interesting next week with the trailer throwing around the word impeachment.
- What I really want to know is what Papa Pope and Jake got going on. I feel like they were speaking code and Huck might be in on it too. I did go back and watch where they zoomed in on the news ticker. It said ‘Louvre in flames as Paris firefighters’ before cutting off.
- So yea, I’m more interested in what Jake and Rowan got going on than more Olitz drama.
