SPOILER ALERT! (stop reading if you don’t want to know what happens in this episode)
Oh boy, I have not laughed this much at a Scandal episode in a while. So many good moments throughout and I’m excited to talk about them. Check out the recap below!
Patty tells Fitz that he’s no longer testifying and Cyrus calls Liv to the White House to discuss her and Fitz getting married so Liv can’t testify and get them out of their current situation. Liv thinks it’s crazy since he’s not even divorced from Mellie. Cyrus believe they will sandbag Liv the same way they did Mellie but Fitz stops him and tells her they will find another way.
Next up on the chopping block is all of OPA (the original members at least) and they answer everything with I don’t know and that they didn’t leak the video of Jeanine. They put the blame on Harrison and the committee is bewildered. VP Susan pays David a visit to find out if there are any legal obligations to resignation because she wants to quit.
Liv talks to Abby about the marriage possibility and tells her that if she goes in front of the committee she will lie. Abby tells her to marry him so she wouldn’t have to lie but she doesn’t want to get married that way because they’re not ready. Later that night, Fitz puts out all the stops with roses and candles on the balcony and properly proposes to Liv but she stops him. She tells him that she doesn’t want “this”, it’s a fantasy and Fitz goes in on her and tells her all the things he didn’t want to do but he did “this” because he loves her. She tells him they’re not ready but he tells her she’s not ready. She tells him that’s not true so he asks her again what she wants and she doesn’t say anything. He tells her that’s what he thought and leaves.
Liv calls Jake and asks him if she can be a married person but Jake is over it and hangs up on her. Quinn shows up and tells her she’s the first witness Friday morning then asks her what she’s going to do. Quinn tells her she might have a solution.
Elise is working with Rowan. Rowan gets in a fight with a guard and ends up in the ER so they call Jake since he’s the only other person who’s visited him. He finds out the other person is Elise and he confronts her but she tells him she was hired by the people behind Lazarus One and she’s there to kill him.
Rowan calls Liv because he believes his life is in danger but she hangs up on him. He then calls Quinn who tells him that she’s not going to help him get out of there.
Mellie asks her if she even knows everything Rowan has done and she tells her that he killed her son. Mellie breaks down and Liv turns and leaves. The next morning in bed she asks Fitz to let her see the ring then tells him okay she’ll marry him. Liv calls Jake again and tells him she’s going to marry Fitz and he tells her don’t ask him for shit because that’s Fitz job now.
Fitz and Mellie go over the terms of the divorce dividing everything 50/50. Mellie signs the papers and he asks her if she wants anything else. She says nothing and he tells her there’s nothing left for her to take. Mellie swiftly tells him about himself and how selfish he is. She tells him she wants to hear about how any of this is her fault. He tells her the hearing and wedding is her fault then reminds her about the jurors who were murdered. She tells him everything she did ended with him and he’s the root cause of everything. She goes in about every single thing she put up with because of him before leaving.
David tells Susan there wouldn’t be any issues with her resigning, she would just sign her resignation letter. He asks her why she would do that and tells him that what the president did is disgusting. He explains to her that when the president has an affair there are three million people in bed with him so the only one on trial is Fitz. She tells him she doesn’t want to be president but he pretty much tells her she would be better than what they currently have.
In the Oval Office they go through the routine of prepping Liv for marrying Fitz. As she’s going to hand over her phone she gets a call from Mellie. At the same time Jake goes to meet Elise at the subway but when he gets there she’s dead. Liv goes to meet Mellie while Abby gives Fitz back the ring. A woman walks into the hearing and hands out envelopes with everything that Rowan had over the committee.
Liv asks Mellie what changed her mind and she tells her that she is her freedom and she’s going to make her president. She tells her she owes him and Rowan shows up with Tom.
Some takeaways…
- So I’m officially calling this episode my favorite of the season. This snatches the title from episode 504 ‘Dog-Whistle Politics’. Everyone’s little speeches were amazing, I don’t think I can pick a favorite. The best part is that Fitz and Liv didn’t get married! I’m just not here for that jump yet.
- I loved how everyone told Jake and Liv about themselves. It’s like everything we’ve (some of us) been thinking is finally coming out.
- Dare I say it? Mellie might be back. That talk she gave Fitz was everything and that deviousness at the end– EVERYTHING! I feel like we try to root for Mellie but she’s been letting us down. Now… I hope she’s back.
- So Elise is dead… that happened.
- Rowan is out and everybody is going to die. You can’t just let a crazy person out and think they won’t start leaving a body count. The next episode should be good.
