SPOILER ALERT! (stop reading if you don’t want to know what happens in this episode)
You guys! The ArrowxFlash crossover has officially ended and boy did a lot happen in those two episodes. We find out more about Oliver’s mystery son and get even more setup for the Legends of Tomorrow spin-off. I’m kicking this recap off with a mini summary of what went down last night on The Flash!
Team Flash (or half of Team Flash) head to Star City to get help from Team Arrow in protecting Kendra from Vandal Savage We find out with some input from Malcolm and her centuries old lover Carter that Savage’s life mission is to kill both Carter and Kendra and he’s succeeded in doing this over two hundred times. Carter tells her that she needs to awaken her true self so that she can sprout her wings which she does the second time after throwing her self off of a building following a little pep talk from Barry; thus becoming Hawkgirl. Meanwhile Barry and Oliver have tracked Savage down and he has a super powerful staff which makes him super powerful and they barely escape being blown up. The team reconvene and decide that they’re not going to run but face Savage head on. They all head to Central City and are having drinks at the local brewery when Barry spots his old flame Samantha with a little boy (which we all know is his son).
Hola Central City (Countryside)
Kendra is getting her memories back but tells Carter she doesn’t remember anything. The gang sets up camp in a house in what looks like the countryside while they try to figure out how to track down Savage. Kendra works with Carter to sharpen up her abilities and help her remember that she’s a warrior priest. Oliver takes some to track down Samantha and asks her if her son William is his. She tells him he’s not (lies) and leaves but he’s able to swipe a piece of hair from William’s hat. He gets a call from Malcolm who’s arranged a meeting between them with Savage to negotiate.
He shows up and tells them that he needs to kill Kendra and Carter in order to live. He then tells them they need to get out of their way or he will destroy the city and everyone they love. He gives them 24 hours to comply. Oliver tells them that they’re not giving them up but Malcolm tells him he needs to ensure whatever he plans to do doesn’t get Thea killed or he’ll kill him.
Diggle, Thea and Laurel bring back a tape of old old footage from 1975 of a professor who says there are objects, calamities, that can kill Savage. Kendra realizes the staff is what could possibly kill him. Oliver has Barry run DNA on the hair and he finds that they match. Oliver freaks out and leaves telling him not to tell anyone just as Felicity comes in. She makes Barry show him the paper and realizes that it’s Oliver’s DNA. Oliver goes back to Samantha and tells her that he knows and asks her why she didn’t tell him. She tells him that his mother told her not to and paid her. Oliver doesn’t believe her but she brings him the check that she never cashed. He tells her that he has the right to get to know him but she tells him that she doesn’t want him to get sucked into his world. She tells him that he can’t tell anyone about him or she will keep him from him, including Felicity.
Felicity confronts Oliver as he’s heading back into the house with the DNA test. She’s mad at him because he lied to her but he tries to tell her he needed a minute to process. She tells him he doesn’t trust him and never will then walks away as Barry comes out. He heads back in and lays out the orders, telling them that it will only be him, Barry, Kendra and Carter with Kendra using the element of surprise. They make it to the meeting spot and try to attack him but he gets the upper hand killing Carter then Kendra when her wings don’t deploy. His staff falls and Barry picks it up. Both he and Oliver try to take him out with it but Oliver tells him to run because they both won’t make it. When Barry tries to run the staff falls and Savage picks it up thrusting it into the ground instantly killing Oliver and sending a blue wave over the city. Barry tries out running it, running so fast he sees his shadow and travels back in time to when he, Oliver and Malcolm are meeting with Savage.
Barry tells Oliver that he traveled back in time and their plan doesn’t work. Oliver thinks they can use it to their advantage and come up with a new plan. Barry tries to tell him that it can mess things up but Oliver is relentless. He asks him what went wrong and he tells him about his fight with Felicity, that he’s someone’s father and everyone dies. He tell him this time they won’t and they have Cisco create special gloves for holding the staff. Oliver then asks Cisco to talk to Kendra to help her access who she is and he’s the one who can do it because he’s clearly in love with her and help her reach her true self.
He talks to her and tells her to focus on the priestess and the nurturing side of her instead of the rage. She tells him that she’s been remembering her past life and lying about it because she doesn’t want to accept it. He has her close her eyes and remember and she goes back to when Savage first killed them and she realizes how they might be able to beat Savage. She shares with the team that during their first death meteors fell and his staff had two stones that glowed. They realize they need to coat the gauntlets with a piece of meteor and Oliver has everyone suit up this time.
It’s everyone against Savage and Barry gets the staff. Both he and Oliver use it on Savage and make him disintegrate into dust. Since they’ve never defeated Savage before they don’t know if Savage will reincarnate himself. Barry asks Oliver if he’s going to tell Felicity because he did mess with time and he doesn’t know how that will affect their relationship. Oliver tells him that he might just keep his son separate from his life but Barry tells him he needs his father. Oliver goes to see Samantha and she tells him her conditions and he accepts letting him go talk to William as a friend of hers. After returning home Felicity asks Oliver if he’s going to tell her what he said he would. She tells him she can’t be a good teammate if he doesn’t tell her what’s going on. Of course he lies and tells her that it’s nothing.
We ends back at the dust of Savage where Malcolm walks in and says the same spiel Savage said when he first killed Kendra and Carter.
Some takeaways…
- I didn’t put too much of the Flash story line into the recap because it could get a little murky when we move back into the solo territory next week. Can I just say that I absolutely love the crossover special; it’s just fun seeing the two team work together.
- New theory, what if the person in the grave is Samantha? I don’t think we’ll go that route but it can explain why Oliver didn’t look so shaken up when he and Barry were at the grave. Or it could still just be Quintin…
- Not sure how the son story line is going to play into the Arrow-verse but I hope we’re not waiting another year for an update on him. I do know that he should’ve listened to Barry because not telling Felicity is going to come back and bite him hard.
