SPOILER ALERT! (stop reading if you don’t want to know what happens in this episode)
Things are starting to heat up and people are picking sides. Liv and Mellie have a heart to heart, Cyrus is looking out for himself and presidential candidates are being announced? I’ve got the recap below!
Olivia gives Mellie some brutal advice while helping her with her book telling her she needs to put in the chapter on why she stayed with Fitz when she knew he had a mistress. Mellie doesn’t believe it’s something that needs to be in the book but Liv tells her it’s important. Mellie tries to change the subject but Liv realizes that she doesn’t know why she stayed. Mellie asks her if she knows why she left and Liv tells her that she’s not the one writing a book. Mellie calls her out and tells her that she doesn’t know why either.
After some takeout Mellie tells Liv that after she found out about the affair she was devastated. She thought it was just a phase that would be over so she stayed. Liv tells her it sounds fake and Mellie freaks out because she doesn’t believe she needs to explain herself to her. Mellie gets in her feelings and pretty much tells Liv that she never had what she had with Fitz; she was just a play thing. Liv gets upset and tells her that’s enough but Mellie leaves telling her that asking for her help was a mistake.
White House Politics
Liz tells VP Susan that 97 percent of Americans believe she would be a great candidate for president. She tells her she needs to consider it because if she doesn’t she’ll regret it for the rest of her life. Susan swiftly tells her no. Liz goes to David and asks him to get Susan to run for president. He tells her he doesn’t think he can convince her but she tells him that Susan has a crush on her so use that. He goes and asks her out on a date and she agrees. After a hearty meal at Gettysburger, David lets on that she would be a great presidential candidate. She tells he sounds like Liz and she was only chosen as vice president because Mellie would be able to easily take her down. David interrupts her with a kiss and tells her not to talk that way again.
Meanwhile, Fitz needs to make a decision on who he’ll back as his successor. Abby and Cyrus, grudgingly, invite reporter Lillian Forester to spend a few days with Fitz and she wants to have a real conversation with him. Cyrus goes to talk to Fitz and tells him that he’s going to miss being president and he shouldn’t waste his last days not making any moves. Fitz doesn’t want to hear anything that he has to say an pretty much dismisses him.
Cyrus runs into Mellie at a restaurant and she tells him that they’re married to both Fitz and Liv for the rest of their lives. Cyrus starts to make his case for how she can be beat Susan but she tells him she already has someone to run her campaign. She then tells him that they made Fitz but Cyrus gets offended repeating “we” before getting up and leaving. Cyrus returns to the White House and tells Fitz he has to leave because his cousin passed away.
Personal Agendas
Mellie stops by Liv’s and tells her that she deserved her and she was her retribution. She was finally free because all of his attention was focused on Liv so she stayed because it was working for everyone. She stayed because he owed her a presidency. Liv tells her that she can never tell anyone any of what she said. After a few drinks Liv tells her that she was happy she was around too because that meant she always had an out. She tells her she left because she was scarred. She then tells her that that’s what she writes, that she was scared and that she didn’t need a man to give her power and it took her a little longer to realize it.
During his interview Lillian interrupts and tells Fitz she’s too distracted because she has a crush on him. He tlels her they can stop the interview and then asks her on a date which she accepts. Liz goes to see David who tells her he’s done manipulating Susan because she’s a good person. Liz stops him and tells him that Susan filed the papers and is running for president.
Liv reads the finished manuscript and tells her it’s really good but she can’t wait to publish because others will be announcing their candidacy. They decide to leak the book which receives a lot of positive feedback while VP Susan makes her announement of candidacy. Abby calls Cyrus to convince him to talk to Fitz and stop him from going on a date with Lillian. Cyrus isn’t really at his cousin’s funeral but in Pennsylvania to sink his hands into the Mayor.
Some takeaways…
- Can I just say I actually like seeing Liv and Mellie in camaraderie. Hopefully this lasts long, besides I think the person she has in mind to run her campaign is Liv.
- Now y’all know I’m a big Jake supporter but since we’ve been back he’s been nothing but a misogynistic douche. I’m not really understanding why Liv is letting him use her like that because that’s exactly what he’s doing. I also want to know what is going with Jake, I know part of it is Jake, but I need some more intel.
- Cyrus, Cyrus, Cyrus… I mean, it’s about time he stopped carrying Fitz. Fitz is such a child and continues to act like a child so I’m glad to see everyone around him taking other initiatives.
