SPOILER ALERT! (stop reading if you don’t want to know what happens in this episode)
Laurel is gone and the team deals with the aftermath of her death. While Quintin struggles with the realization that Laurel is gone, the team plays the blame game but they all blame themselves. It’s all in the recap below!
The Flashback
We open in May 2013 with Tommy’s funeral where Laurel gives the eulogy in place of Oliver who can’t deliver it himself. Oliver stops by Laurel’s afterwards and tells her he felt like he didn’t have the right to give his eulogy because he failed him. A week later he and Laurel reminisce on his life and she tells him that they can still make a difference but together before sharing a kiss. Oliver leaves her a letter telling her that he has to go away because he will only hold her back. He tells her he needs time alone but she’s always seen the best in him because she’s always been the best of him.
We’re at the hospital immediately after Laurel’s time of death is called. Quintin doesn’t take the news well and Oliver and Diggle return to the lair. Diggle blames himself for Laurel’s death because he didn’t listen to Oliver about his brother. Oliver calls the team in to discuss what to do about Darhk but Quintin interrupts them with a news article of a blonde girl running around using Laurel’s Canary Cry. Quintin thinks Laurel could be alive because Cisco keyed the device to her voice but when they go to the morgue she’s still there.
Oliver asks the doctor who was in Laurel’s room and could’ve taken the device. She tells him about a frequent flyer patient but she can’t release her information because of patient-doctor privilege. Felicity uses the hospital footage to track down the girl. While having dinner with Alex the faux Canary shows up and attacks Alex. Thea jumps in and tries to stop her. She briefly gets the upper hand before she escapes. Thea calls Oliver who tracks her down asking her why she’s parading as Black Canary. She tells him that he abandoned “them” at Remington and failed this city before escaping.
Oliver tells the team he believes her family was some of the people held hostage by HIVE. Felicity looks up the families and they find out that her parents were at Remington. Felicity finds Oliver alone and he tells her he feels a little responsible for both Laurel and Evelyn. Felicity also blames herself because she wasn’t there with the team and should’ve been. Thea calls and tells them that Diggle is MIA and they leave to track him down. Diggle pulls over Ruve’s car and is about to ill her when Oliver swoops in and stops him. Diggle is pissed and tells him he’s so angry and every minute Darhk is free is another moment he can hurt someone else he loves.
Oliver tells him that he’s not that type of person and whatever he does won’t bring Laurel back. He tells him he can’t forget who he is and they can’t become them. The return to the lair where they hear Ruve’s press conference asking that arrest warrants be released for the vigilantes. She tells the press that she and her security detail were attacked along with Alex who was attacked by the Black Canary. She even stoops so low to blame them for Laurel’s death.
Quintin goes to Nyssa and asks her about the Lazarus Pit but she tells him that she destroyed it months ago. He tells her that he’s going to find a way to bring her back himself. Nyssa contacts Oliver to warn him about Quintin’s behavior and he tells her that he’ll keep an eye on it. Oliver finds him looking for the League and tells him that there isn’t a way to bring her back because if there was he would do it. Quintin tells him Laurel was his rock before finally breaking down realizing she’s no longer there.
Felicity talks to Diggle and convinces him that what happened to Laurel was not his fault. While talking the facial recognition signal goes off and it’s Evelyn at Ruve’s location. The team goes to stop her but she’s able to take down a bunch of the vigilante task force. Oliver gets to her before she enters the room but she doesn’t listen. She goes in and holds Ruve at gunpoint but Oliver asks her what she knows about the real Black Canary. He tells her that she was a hero and she should ask herself what she’d do. Evelyn drops the gun escaping. Ruve tells the task force to arrest Oliver but he escapes.
Back at the lair Thea is upset because she believes Evelyn ruined Laurel’s legacy but he doesn’t believe that’s true. The next day they all attend Laurel’s burial. Oliver delivers the eulogy and while speaking Evelyn shows up. Oliver tells everyone in attendance that Laurel was the Black Canary and that’s why she was at Iron Heights. He tells them she was a hero and she’d want them to save their city. Barry shows up afterwards and Oliver tells him that he’s going to kill Darhk. He asks if there’s anything he can do and he tells him he wants to be left alone. Oliver returns to the car where Felicity tells him he has to kill Darhk but he tells her he doesn’t know how. She tells him he has to find a way for Laurel, the city and all of them.
Some takeaways…
- I don’t know what’s gong to happen in this finale but I think it’s going to be a pretty good one. We still have a couple of episodes until then but I wanted to put that out there.
- I like that we got Barry for like 10 seconds. He’s quick exit made me chuckle though. He didn’t ask no questions he just left.
- This was actually a pretty solid episode and I liked how the flashback tied into the present. I think the team honored Laurel well and now we’ll see how the team gets on post Laurel.
- Ruve is one evil b****. She is so dirty to the point that I kind of want to know what her story is. We’ve seen her have moments with Darhk, Oliver and with the press as mayor. She seems to carry herself in a way that I know there’s something more to her. I mean, she is Darhk’s right hand woman.
