SPOILER ALERT! (stop reading if you don’t want to know what happens in this episode)
Oliver faces off against Darhk in the Arrow season 4 finale which has the fate of the world in jeopardy. After a season of personal struggles the team works against limited time to try to save the world. It’s all in my recap below!
Reiter shoots Oliver in the leg and blows up the plane that’s escaping with the escaped captives. Reiter tries to kill Taiana but she overpowers him and Oliver shoots him with an arrow. The darkness takes over Taiana and she attacks Oliver but she’s able to come out of it. She tells him the only way she can defeat it is if Oliver kills her. He doesn’t want to kill her but she begs him telling him that if he ever cared about her he would do it. He kills her quickly just as some of the other captives show up and he explains about the idol. He tells them about a different way off the island and Amanda Waller shows up telling him he completed the mission but it was also to show him that sometimes killing is the only path to justice.
45 Minutes
Darhk uses his powers on Donna to make Felicity do what he wants. He slowly sucks out her life but Oliver and Diggle show up to try to stop him but he’s too powerful. His ghosts show up shooting fire and as he’s about to kill Oliver Thea shows up with his daughter. He’s stops and escapes with the laptop as they realize Curtis is badly injured.
They take Curtis back to the lair to try to save him. Oliver tells Felicity that the hope she had in hikm was enough for him to go against Darhk but now it’s not enough. Felicity tracks the laptop to an office building downtown and the team heads there. They find the GPS and the screens boot up revealing over 15,000 nukes that will launch in 2 hours but Star City only has 45 minutes.
They all start making plans in case they’re not able to save the world. Lyla sends her team to City Hall where the source of Darhk’s power is but Oliver tells her that she’s sending them on a suicide mission. The team arrives and team Arrow listens in as Darhk murders them all. Felicity gets in through Cooper’s firewalls but as she tries to shut it down Darhk’s ghosts show up shooting at them. The team fights them off with a little help from Malcolm but the place is destroyed.
Everyone has pretty much lost all hope and Oliver tells Felicity that if he had done things differently maybe Laurel would be alive. Curtis wakes up during all of this to she some optimism telling them that the Green Arrow who gave him hope during the last debacle when he was ready to leave. He tells him that if he could give him hope then he can give them hope now.
Oliver goes out into the streets and tells the city that somehow and someway they will survive this. He tells them this is their home and they will look to each other for hope and strength. They spot the nuke on the news and Felicity and Curtis go out to hack it since it’s close enough for them to try to stop it. They’re able to divert it from the city and the people explode into cheers. They try to get the disarm code to as many places as possible while Curtis and Felicity were able to find out the location of Cooper.
Oliver makes the decision to go to City Hall to take on Darhk but the entire team wants to go. He tells Diggle to stay behind to help the city and heads to City Hall alone. Everyone else heads to Cooper’s location while Darhk beats the shit out of Oliver. As he’s attacking him the citizens show up defending Green Arrow but DArhk knocks them on their feet. Oliver tells him that it won’t just be him who will stop him and he uses the hope of the people to block his power. Darhk has to fight Oliver fist to fist.
The team finds Cooper who can’t stop hacking because Darhk has a bullet traveling to his heart and he’ll know when he stops. Felicity tells him that he can still be the man she loved and save the world. This convinces him and he stops but Darhk realizes and kills him. They see that they can’t stop all of the nukes so they divert them to space.
Lyla and Diggle show up to back up Oliver as Darhk’s ghosts show up and they face off against them and the city. Darhk gets Oliver’s arrow and shoots him but Quintin shows up and helps him. Oliver takes Darhk on fist to fist again bringing him to his knees. Darhk tells him that he can’t kill him but Oliver tells him that not only did he kill his friend but he killed thousands of people. He tells him this time he doesn’t have a choice before stabbing him with the arrow.
The following day Quintin lets the team know he’s leaving town for a little bit and his suspicion is now permanent. Thea also announces that she too is taking a break from the team to find herself. This leaves just Oliver, Diggle and Felicity but Diggle tells Oliver he needs to figure out where he got off track and it looks like he reenlists in the army. Oliver gets a call from the city chairman who about the open mayor position and he accepts it being sworn in as the new mayor.
Some takeaways…
- Finally, Oliver killed one of the city’s major threats meaning we should not see Darhk in any future season.
- Although, I really liked Neal McDonough as Darhk; he’s just so good at being bad.
- I think this was a solid finale, and could possibly have been a series finale. I feel like I say this every season but it’s true.
- Oliver is now mayor, that will be interesting next season to see how that all plays out (assuming the events on The Flash doesn’t alter anything).
- I don’t know, it was just like everyone needed to get away to find themselves again. Now that we know Curtis will be back (Echo Kellum was promoted to series regular) it should be a solid team.
- I honestly have no complaints about the finale. Not going to lie, I had forgot why Oliver was on the island again. If I was to complain about anything it would be the flashbacks. They need to figure that out because it’s not working as great as it did in the first two seasons.
