DIRTY JOHN IS THE TV ADAPTATION I REALLY DIDN’T NEED

Dirty John Season 1

Oh guys, I might be one of the few who feels this way but I was not the biggest fan of Dirty John on Bravo. Don’t get me wrong, I think the real life story is fascinating. I listened to the podcast and I’ve watched most of the news specials. Regardless of my true crime obsession, when it comes to the scripted series starring Connie Britton and Eric Bana I just wasn’t that big of a fan.

It definitely didn’t have anything to do with the acting. I thought the casts portrayal of their real life counter parts were on point for the most part. There were some moments where I felt Connie Britton was playing Debra Newell a little too naive but that could’ve just been me. I just think this is a story better served being told from the survivors of this crazy man or in a made for TV movie. Rarely do I root for a made for TV movie but I think I would’ve had a better time watching in that format.

AN UNNECESSARY RECAP

There was a lot of extra fluff that I don’t think we needed and it made a big splash especially in episode 7. That entire episode could’ve been scrapped and the final ten minutes or so combined with the finale. It just felt like a recap of everything we’d already seen up to that point. The show is called Dirty John and we’ve been watching him manipulate people for six episodes. We don’t need a 30 minute recap into how he’s manipulative.

When we finally get to the confrontation between John and Terra – what all of us familiar with the story have been waiting for – it seems rushed. We didn’t need the final scene when they’re at Debra’s mom’s house and the Debra and John’s sister’s introduction was a little cringe-worthy.

FINAL THOUGHTS…

Overall the show was just okay for me. I also don’t think I’ll be tuning into season 2 unless they have a very good synopsis. What did you think of Dirty John? Let me know below or on Instagram!
